He was admitted to Netcare Sunninghill Hospital in Johannesburg to undergo a procedure aimed to remove a blood clot in his neck which took around an hour.
Doctors at the hospital located the clot in good time while it was in a relatively safe part of his body. A clot in the blood is generally dangerous especially if it moves into organs such as the brain, heart and the lungs.
According to Netcare's website, the hospital specialises in cardiology, a branch of medicine that deals with diseases and abnormalities associated with the heart.
A relative also stated that the Former President was reportedly responding well to treatment at the South African hospital, although the family remains tight lipped about his condition. His two children, Judy Wanjiku & Anthony Githinji, are among family members who accompanied him to South Africa.
Mwai Kibaki was first admitted to Karen Hospital after he fell ill at his Muthaiga home on the night of Saturday, August 20. He later flown to South Africa for specialised treatment on Sunday, August 21.
