Over 200 Taveta students miss school due to floods

Over 200 students  from Lotima primary school in Taveta constituency are unable to attend school after a bridge they were using to cross was swept by floods. The  bridge over a crocodile infested Majengo canal  connects the schools and Marodo village.
Data by the Kenya Red Cross has revealed that over 532 households have been affected by floods in the area.
The worst-hit  areas include Njoro,Riata,Kitobo,Madarasani and Mrabani. Others are Kiwalwa, Abori, Kimorigo and Lutima.
The pupils have now been forced to abandon learning until the ministry of education and humanitarian bodies intervene.
Taveta District Education Director Hassan Abdulrahaman said they are establishing a temporary boarding center in the affected areas to host students who experience difficulties in attending classes.
"We are responding swiftly in collaboration with provincial administration, Red Cross, World Vision and other stakeholders to set a students camp that shall serve as a temporary boarding facility. Our main concern is to help those pupils who can't cross Majengo canal." said Abdulrahaman.
Ms Rose Mmare, Lotima primary head teacher said the floods had negatively affected learning programme since the beginning of second term. She urged the government to help flood hit area regain normalcy.
The director said learning had also been affected in Kiwalwa and Abori primary schools due to heavy rains.
