70 passengers escape death narrowly along Nairobi - Nakuru highway

Over seventy passengers escaped death narrowly after losing control and crushing by the road side along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway moments after hitting a pedestrian.

During the Thursday evening accident at Fly-Over Trading center the pedestrian however died on the spot and scores of passengers were injured and rushed to various hospitals.

The accident occurred as the driver of the bus which was heading to Nairobi from Kakamega tried evading hitting the pedestrian.

A witness John Kimani said that the deceased was to blame after he decided to cross the road without checking leading to the accident.

He said that in impact, the bus lost control before crushing on its side injuring the passengers majority of whom were rushed to Kijabe Mission hospital.

“The deceased who is not known in this area rushed from one side of the road to the other without checking and he was hit by the bus and died on the spot,” he said.

Njabini OCPD Jane Munywoki confirmed the incident adding that the condition of the injured passengers was stable with most of them treated and discharged.

“On Thursday evening, a pedestrian crossing the highway was hit by a bus and died on the spot and the injured were treated and discharged,” she said.

The accident caused a massive jam along the highway forcing motorists to seek alternative routes before police could clear the scene.
