Manchester United failed to move to third in the Premier League following a 2-1 loss to Wolves.

United took the lead via Scott McTominay's 12th minute strike, but the hosts replied through Diogo Jota’s 24th minute effort.  United were reduced to 10 men after Ashley Young's sending off, before Chris Smalling’s own goal gifted wolves victory.

United remain fifth on the table with 61 points same as Tottenham, and two behind third placed Arsenal. Meanwhile, Fulham were relegated after a 4-1 loss  away to Watford, they follow Huddersfield to the championship.

For the second time in 18 days, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer trudged down the touchline at Molineux and offered his congratulations to Nuno Espirito Santo. Same score line, same problems on another miserable night here for the Manchester United manager.

He had described the FA Cup defeat to Wolves last month as the worst performance under him, and there wasn't a big enough improvement on Tuesday night to change the outcome.

Yes, United started well and created enough chances to win. They were also handicapped by the deserved sending-off of captain Ashley Young just before the hour mark.

But they conceded two calamitous goals and were in disarray by the end as Wolves threatened to overrun them again.

This was Solskjaer's third defeat in four games, and the solitary victory in that sequence was a rather fortuitous one at home to Watford at the weekend.

Suddenly the problems that engulfed his predecessor Jose Mourinho have returned with a vengeance.
