As I type this, I am listening to some new Naija songs. It's good seeing Wizkid good making moves, signing major recording deals with international labels. Why is everybody's talk these days?

Is it because of his success with his “One Dance” collabo with international rapper Drake? Well, this shows that Africa has immense musical talent and potential — this is no doubt. When you come to Kenya, the situation is not any different. There is immense talent.

Just the other day, I read how P-Square are living large. Can Kenyan artists live their dreams too?

This is the reason why Kiss TV has been looking for the next big star in Kenya. Through The Search, the reality TV show that’s trending now, it has been showcasing the best of Kenyan upcoming musical talent. The contestants have brought their A-game. But who will walk away with 1 million bob and a lucrative recording deal?

One of the contestants on the show is Ray, whose passion for music is quite unexpected

“Really, by accident…..I intended to join drama club in campus but instead walked in on the choir as they were rehearsing in the theater auditorium. I was talked into doing a spot audition and just like that I was automatically a tenor in the choir…all this happened so fast but you know the saying “the rest is history”…at least it was a coercion into something I ultimately enjoyed and came to really like”, he says.

Could he be the one big artist you’ve been waiting for? The fresh voice you have been craving? He says that he looks up to Diamond Platnumz, one of the most sought after, well paid musicians in Africa. If you are a Diamond fan or follower, you’ll relate to Ray’s story perfectly.

“Diamond really inspires me…I watched his latest video Salome against his first video Mbagala…it’s amazing to see the progress he has been able to make over the years. From a guy who had no qualms singing amidst garbage at a dumpsite in nothing but his champalis (slippers) to a juxtaposition against the artistic opulence illustrated in the Salome video is really amazing and inspiring,” he says.

This Sunday, another contestant will go home. This was after the Kisii Boys Band have already gone home, because Coach Filah felt that they were the weakest in vocals. Who will be going home this weekend?

African Muhonja, to the viewers’ surprise was also sent home regardless of her good rendition of James Brown Hit It’s a Man’s World. Anto who hoped Savage Garden would help him stay in the Academy unfortunately got himself sent home.

This week two contestants are going home. Who will it be? Be sure to tune in to watch the show!
