The Catholic University of Eastern Africa has announced the closure of Nairobi and Kisumu campuses in January.

CUEA Vice Chancellor Justus Mbae, in a letter to stakeholders, on Tuesday said this is part of a turnaround strategy to enable the varsity to utilise its resources.

He said this followed consultations with the University Board of Trustees, council, and stakeholders.

"The decision was made after careful consideration of the effect it will have on the students, and staff particularly, and all those concerned."

The VC said they have also informed the Commission on University Education of the intended closure.

"We take this opportunity to inform the students, parents, guardians, benefactors, suppliers, and stakeholders that following this development, necessary arrangements are being undertaken for a smooth transition following the closure of the campuses," Mbae says in the letter.

"Much as we are saddened by this development, I would like to assure all our students and stakeholders that the modalities put in place will enable all students in the most equitable manner without compromising quality."

Tough rules set by the CUE have forced several universities to close some of their campuses.

South Eastern Kenya University closed its Nairobi campus at Development House while Presbyterian University was also forced to close its Nairobi CBD campus.

Both transferred students to their main campuses.
