Drama as matatu operator forced to undergo circumcision in Narok

Residents of Narok town were on Monday treated to a rare drama after boda boda operators forced a 35 year-old driver to undergone circumcision.

The more than 50 operators picked the driver at his place of work in Total area and took him to Narok County Referral Hospital using the handcart.

The man is said to be a father of two children.

Before reaching the hospital, the man was frog-marched around the town street naked before police intervened and rescued him from angry operators and members of the public.

He was also taken to Narok river where they washed him in readiness to make him face the ‘knife’

The police at one time had to lob teargas to disperse the locals before taking the driver away to the police station before he headed to the hospital for the cut.

Operators who spoke to the Star said that they were angered by the man for staying long for before taking the mandatory circumcision meant for men.

“The news was leaked by one of his girlfriend and that made forced our hand since we have warned him several times but he has been adamant saying he has undergone the initiation,” said one of the operators who wished not to be named.

During the drama, total of Sh 10,000 was raised to help him undergo the initiation.

Another man identified as John Ngugi said as per the Kikuyu culture a boy must be circumcised and he should be respected.

“This one is an embarrassment to our community and society and we will ensure that he faces the knife just like other men,” said Ngugi.

Narok North OCPD Joseph Kisombe said the police saved man from the angry operators and was taken to the police custody for safety.
