Driver behind matatu madness charged

A Matatu driver who rammed into a Police vehicle and two people who caused chaos along Moi Avenue last sunday, were on Wednesday arraigned before a Traffic Court.
Victor Wanjau, Joseph Muiruri and John Mwaura today appeared before Milimani Senior Resident Magistrate Benson Nzakyo and Francis Andayi  where they were charged with reckless driving.
It is alleged that on 9th September this year, along Moi Avenue they drove their vehicles in a rush and negligent manner that endangered the lives of other road users.
The drivers from Manchester, Royal and Naeku Sacco's were also separately charged with other traffic offenses.
Wanjau and his two co- accused faced a further charge of driving motor vehicles that were not properly maintained.
According to the charge sheet, they are accused that around 11Am on the same dates, being drivers of a Matatu christened ‘Ty Dolla’, they operated a vehicle whose equipment was not in good working condition.
The drivers who were not represented by any legal counsel denied the charges and were freed on a Cash bail of 150, 000 shillings for all the Counts.
The matter will be mentioned on September 19th this year.
During the incident that occurred last weekend just a stone’s throw away from Central Police Station, the matatu is seen reversing with a crowd of youths dangerously dangling onto its exterior before ramming into the back of the police vehicle.
They were allegedly going for a road trip to Meru County.
