An elderly man seeking pastures for his livestock was gored to death by a buffalo in Eburru area of Gilgil constituency as cases of human-wildlife conflict continued to rise.

The father of five was cutting grass near Eburru forest when the lone buffalo attacked and killed him before members of the public could come to his rescue.

Following the death, area residents vowed to avenge the death noting that the number of wildlife attacks in the area had been on the rise.

They attributed the high number of wild animals within the area to the ongoing drought which had pushed them from the forest to nearby farms in search of pastures.

According to one of the area residents James Kimani, the victim was cutting the grass near the road when the animal attacked.

He said that despite his screams for help, members of the public could only watch from a distance as the wild animal attacked him.

“We have lost a couple of men in this area due to wildlife attacks and despite our cries to KWS nothing has been done,” he said.

A senior KWS officer who declined to be named admitted that cases of wildlife straying into farms and estates in Gilgil and Naivasha were on the rise.

The officer admitted that it would be hard to contain them as majority of the animals were situated in game ranches which bordered the farms.

“The current drought has taken its toll on the animals pushing them from their haven to nearby farms in search of pastures and water,” said the officer.
