A farmer from Bosnia village in Passenga location, Rurii ward, Ol Kalou, is counting losses after a pack of eight wild dogs killed 18 of his 20 sheep yesterday morning. Joel Kagunya, 39, said he incurred a loss of a hundred thousand shillings(sh100,000).

13 sheep were completely eaten, while the dogs left behind five carcasses after they were overcome by villagers who chased them away. The remaining two sheep were injured in a way that they cannot survive.

Kagunya had tethered his sheep in an open field in his land at around 6 am, and went to collect milk from farmers as he is one of the transporters who deliver milk to Ol Kalou dairy. He said the animals invaded his home shortly after as they were discovered about 7:00 am, causing panic in the whole village as women and children screamed.

The villagers tried to hunt them but in vain. A contingent of police led by Nyandarua County Deputy Police commander, Joseph Mwenje, arrived at the scene and called the KWS officers to camp in the area to drive away or capture the dogs whose origin is yet to be established.

Mwenje advised the residents to be extra cautious and vigilant because greater danger lurks with these wild dogs in the area.

The locals have expressed fear over safety of their children who leave for school before six in the morning. The dogs are reported to have escaped and are believed to hide in the bushes where they pass on the way to, and from school. They have called on the government to act with speed.

Kenya Wild Life officers who arrived on the scene advised the residents against eating the carcasses or feeding them to their dogs noting this poses the danger of escalation the problem in case the killer dogs were rabid. They further advised that in case the remaining two sheep were to be slaughtered, meat inspectors must verify their suitability.

They urged the resident to call KWS immediately whenever such strange animals are discovered.
