A fierce fire razed a classroom and dormitory at Nyabondo Boys' Primary School in Nyakach, Kisumu county .

Residents put out the fire but were unable to salvage any property.

Jack Otieno, Nyakach sub-county education director, said the fire started at around 8am as pupils prepared to leave for their mid-term break.

Otieno said the cause had not been established but that officers were assessing the damage.

Nyakach OCPD Henry Malova, who visited the school, said no casualties were reported and that they were carrying out investigations.

A task force studying last year's rampant school fires found that political interference, peer pressure, indiscipline and pressure for good grades were among the causes.

The team also cited lack of intelligence gathering mechanisms and mismanagement of school resources.
