Four Chinese Nationals Arrested On Lake Naivasha After Found Fishing Illegally

Fisheries officer and members of the beach management units have arrested four Chinese nationals found fishing illegally on Lake Naivasha.

The four who were fishing in a breeding area using hooks were nabbed hours after fishing was banned for three days to facilitate restocking.

Irate members of the beach management unit impounded their fishing gear as they decried the rising number of foreigners fishing in the lake.

According to the chairman off Lake Naivasha Boat Owners Association David Kilo, the number of Chinese illegally fishing in the lake was on the rise.

Kilo said that the foreigners were working in cahoots with some government officers and locals to fish in protected areas - a move that was affecting fish production.

"We have arrested four Chinese suspects who were found illegally fishing in a protected zone and have handed them to fisheries officer," he said. He noted that the aliens were also involved in selling their catch to members of the public at cheaper prices.

Meanwhile, officers from the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) and Administration Police officers raided an illegal liquor factory in Naivasha nabbing thousand of liters of the brew.

During the raid at Can-ten Factory located near the Naivasha Golf Club, the officers also recovered hundreds of fake KRA stamps.

Others present during the raid were officers from public health and Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBs) in which the proprietor of the factory was arrested.

The officers were acting on a tip-off following complaints from members of the public that the company had been brewing for a couple of months. Confirming the raid, Naivasha sub-county commissioner Isaac Masinde said that they had managed to recover hundreds of bottles filled with the illegal brew.

Speaking in his office, Masinde noted that the factory owner did not have a license or government documents adding that he would be charged in court with various offenses. "The brew was being packed in very poor conditions and the owner had illegal KRA stamps which he could not explain where he got them," he said.

Masinde announced a major operation against second generation brews and bhang in the sub-county as a way of restoring sanity in the town. "We have launched an operation against all illegal bars in the town and also all illegal structures near schools in this town," he said.
