Fourth-Poorest Country In The World, Chad, Sponsoring French Team Metz To Improve Its Image

Chad, a landlocked and impoverished country in northern Central Africa, has decided to sponsor French club FC Metz, a Ligue 1 team based in the French region of Lorraine.

The kits of the newly-promoted French outfit now feature the slogan ''Tchad: Oasis du Sahel'' (Chad, Oasis of the Sahel).

The Sahel region is an area between the Sahara to the north and the Sudanian Savanna to the south, which stretches all across the African continent.

The decision was made by the Chadian authorities in the hope of attracting more tourists to the country and to improve its image in the world.

But the sponsorship has been criticised by many in both France and Chad, with claims it is a waste of money and that, considering it is the fourth-poorest country in the world behind Eritrea, the Central African Republic and Niger, numerous other problems are in need of attention besides football.

According to the UN, Chad is currently hosting over 280,000 refugees from Sudan’s Darfur region, and over 55,000 from the Central African Republic.

However, the Chadian Minister of Sports Betel Miarom said the sponsorship would help the country’s need to erase its negative image, according to a report in French sports paper L’Equipe.

Miarom hopes the sponsorship deal ''will go well beyond football'' and will ''intensity the economic ties'' between Chad and its former coloniser France.
