Four men died  while two were rescued during a routine cleanup of a borehole at Kiuu ward in Githurai 45, Kiambu County on Sunday.

Two rescued were rushed to Kahawa Wendani Hospital and Wendani Medical services for treatment.

Kiuu ward MCA Margaret Mwago who arrived at the scene shortly after the incident, called a fire brigade vehicle and officers from Githurai Kimbo Police to assist in the rescue.

The MCA attributed the accident to shortage of tap water in the area, which forced residents to dig boreholes which do not have clean water as there were also many latrines in the area.

She said the water pipes given by the Kiambu county government were not enough to supply the area with tap water, prompting residents to pledge to purchase the required pipes.

Mwago added that the ward lacked First Aid equipment but promised that action would be taken to purchase the necessary equipment.

Jane Wangari, a resident decried the lack of ambulances, saying the victims would have survived if a rescue team and ambulance had arrived earlier.
