GOLD COAST 7s Round Up: Kenya lose in Shield final, Fiji crowned winners

The Kenya Sevens had a disappointing outing in the first tournament of the 2014-15 IRB Sevens World Series. Kenya was relegated to Shield after finishing 3rd in Pool B following loses to Wales (19-24) and South Africa (0-45) and a 42-0 win over minnows American Samoa.

Kenya’s hopes of a higher finishing were dented once again when they lost 17-19 to Portugal in the Bowl quarters but all the same managed to reach the finals of the Shield after defeating Japan 17-15 in the semi-finals. The final was a reflection of how the tournament has been for Kenya as they lost 7-40 to Canada.

Fiji won the Main Cup after defeating Samoa 31-24 and hence meant that they have won three of the last four editions of the Gold Coast Sevens. The Fijians got the finals after topping pool C courtesy of wins over Scotland (40-7), Portugal (38-0) and Australia (35-12) before overcoming Wales (31-10) and England (48-7) in the quarters and semi-finals respectively.

England finished 3rd after defeating South Africa 19-0.

Kenya have ample time to prepare for the next tournament of the Series which would be held in Dubai on the weekend of 5th and 6th December and they will be keen to make amends after finishing 14th with just 2 points.
