Homa Bay Governor Cyprian Awiti has ordered a crackdown on a cartel behind the theft of drugs in the county's public hospitals.

Awiti asked the county's Health Executive Lawrence K’Oteng and Chief Officer Martin Owino to liaise with national security officers to break the syndicate and punish perpetrators.

"We spend a lot of money buying drugs for all our hospitals but I get reports that some of these drugs are stolen by the officers supposed to guard against misuse and theft,” he said.

"I am extremely annoyed by these reports and we are sending a serious warning to the culprits that their days are numbered. We will deal with them very firmly."

He was speaking at Rusinga Girls' High School on Friday during a funds drive for learning facilities.
