HONGERA! Kenya Lauded After Successfully Hosting The IAAF World U-18 Championships

Kenya continues to receive praise from all over the world after successfully hosting the just concluded, World Under 18 Athletics Championships.

The 5-day event at the renovated Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani kicked off last week Wednesday and concluded yesterday Sunday July 16th.

After Kenyans registered minimal numbers in the 60,000-seater stadium in the first two days, athletics fans came out in large numbers on Saturday with the athletics governing body, International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) announcing that the event was watched by the largest crowd to ever grace an IAAF U18 track event.

A total of 37,600 fans watched the morning session while the evening session attracted 50,300 fans.

Kenya bagged a total of 15 medals; four gold, seven silver and four bronze.

Kenya’s gold medalists were George Manangoi (1, 500m), Caren Chebet (2, 000m), Jackline Wambui (800m) and Leonard Bett (2, 000m steeplechase).

The silver medalists were Edward Zakayo (3000M) Cleophas Kandie Meyan (2000M Steeplechase) Moitalel Mpoke (400m hurdles), Mary Moraa (400 M), Lydia Jeruto (800 M), Emmaculate Chepkirui (3, 000 M), Mercy Chepkurui (2000 Me Steeplechase).

Japhet Toroitich (800 M), Stanley Mburu Waithaka (3, 000 M), Dominic Ndigiti (10,000 Metres Race Walk) and Edina Jebitok (1500 Metres) clinched bronze medals.

With Kenyan athletes once again terrorizing the track events, and Kenyans lighting up the stands with a carnival-like atmosphere, they were not getting anything less than praise from all over the globe, with sponsors, partners and participants expressing pride at how everything went down.
