"I don’t take a single drop of alcoholic drinks as people purport that I sometimes do", Baringo County Governor Benjamin Cheboi has said.

Governor Cheboi cleared the air by dismissing claims by his opponents who posted on social media that he was prone to taking hard liquor and gets very drunk, even to the extent of snubbing his official duties.

He said the rumors were meant to tarnish his name by his political enemies so that they may gain political mileage and called on members of the public to ignore them.

“Some people want to paint my character badly though I have never at any given time settled on a bottle of beer either in form of leisure or intending to get drunk,” said Cheboi, adding that his integrity is intact.

He was addressing the public during the funeral of former Kabarnet Mayor, the late John Kiprono at Kituro, Baringo Central on Saturday. Kiprono died after a long battle with cancer.

However, Cheboi eulogized the late Mayor Kiprono as a humble and loyal politician who always liked to tell the truth.

“One day as my close friend we had a visit with the late Mayor to a European country and while there we saw how the white men arrange variety of alcohol on the table in every meal, he asked me why I don’t take a single drink and yet people at home used to say the Governor is a hard drunkard” posed Cheboi.

He said the Mayor got shocked when I told him I have never tasted alcohol in my life, “and I want to repeat here today in this gathering that myself as Baringo Governor I haven’t engaged in drinking” he said.
