One of the artists behind the infamous Ikamba song has been charged with three counts of ethnic contempt.

John Gichiri Njau was bonded by the National Cohesion and Integration Commission ahead of today’s arraignment.

This followed his song that disparages a community.

Officials at the commission say they are ready to charge him as they hunt for his co-accused.

NCIC chairperson Francis ole Kaparo last week said the matter was being investigated by the NCIC and the DCI.

The Kikuyu song was produced in reaction to the ban on charcoal trade in Kitui which was imposed by Governor Charity Ngilu to save trees.

The ban has been in place since 2014 but was enforced after Ngilu assumed office.

This prompted reaction from locals who burned a lorry that was found transporting charcoal.

And in response, the artists produced a song depicting negatively locals of Kitui and Kamba at large.

Earlier, Makueni County MCAs led by Majority leader Kyalo Mumo, tabled the motion about the song and was backed by Nominated MCA Mbula Mutula, who said that immediate action should be taken and failure to do so they will send their message the hard way by closing the Mombasa-Nairobi highway.

“If immediate action is not taken, we will close Mombasa-Nairobi highway and send our message in the depraved way,” said Mbula.
