I Will Peacefully Hand Over Power If I Lose - Uhuru Kenyatta

President Uhuru Kenyatta is ready to hand over power to whoever will win the next general election adding that he will obey the will of Kenyans.

Kenyatta said he will not cling to power if defeated like it has happened to some African Presidents but will just hand it over to the winner after the August 8, 2017 general election.

During a press conference held at Sagana State Lodge in Nyeri County Sunday morning, the Head of State said he will obey the will of Kenyans or the election results and abide as per the law.

“If it so happens, I will obey the will of Kenya. That is law. Nothing more,” He said.

This comes barely a week after President Yaya Jammeh of The Gambia failed to hand over power and step down honorably following the last year’s presidential election which was held on 1st  December, 2016.

It took the military force after as the last option by Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) leaders.

At the same time, the Head of State said Kenya is hoping for continuation of good relations between this country and United States of America following the taking of office by President Donald Trump recently.

“We have enjoyed good relations between the two countries and hope this will continue. However, we are waiting for the policy directions from the new administration,” he added

Kenyatta said once the new administration set up policies, this will give Kenya and Africa directions but hope the new policies will consolidated and strengthen the relations.

He noted the two countries have continued to enjoy good relationship on matters of security and development.

He however said his will is to see Africa depending on its own without support from donors.

The Head of State has since Thursday been in Mt Kenya region to rally voters to register in large numbers.

He is expected to tour North Eastern region this week.

“The chiefs should also help in handing over the IDs which are lying idle in their offices and not wait for the owners to collect it since the chiefs should offer that service,” he added.

He said mobile registrations services have been set aside to ensure more registration of voters are done in North Eastern areas.
