Kenya Sevens Coach Plans To Meet With The Striking Players

Kenya Sevens coach and his team jetted back to the country after a dismal performance in Australia's Gold coast sevens, last weekend. The team which was comprised of players aged below the age of 22, found it hard to deal with their opponents with the likes of record try scorer, Collins Injera out of the team.

Injera, the team's vice captain, staged a strike a couple of weeks ago following a dispute over contracts with Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) before they refused to accompany the rest of the first team squad to apply for visas to Australia.

Horace Otieno, back-rower Biko Adema, Oscar Ouma, Oscar Ayodi and Felix Ayange are among the regulars who were dropped after the core players protested KRU plans to introduce performance based contracts for the new season.

The coach announced he will have a meeting with the striking players today to chart the way forward. Sources, however, indicate that a good number of the striking players have already resumed training and most of them have already picked up their contracts from the union.

Treu said he was encouraged by the performance of the team in Gold Coast, adding that the team can only get better. “The technical bench is happy from what we saw in Gold Coast. We had limited time to train but the boys showed fighting qualities and spirit and I think they did well,” added Treu.

The coach also announced he will have a meeting with the striking players today to chart the way forward.

Treu said the margins at the IRB Sevens are small and mistakes are ruthlessly punished. He cited the matches against Wales and Portugal, saying the result would have been different was it not for the team’s lapse in concentration in the final seconds. Kenya lost 24-19 to wales and 17-12 Portugal.

“The boys learnt the hard way that you can’t let your concentration levels slip and going forward, it will be valuable lesson,” the tactician noted.

Kenya face England, Australia and USA in the Dubai leg in December and Treu admitted it will a tough pool. “It’s a difficult pool but I think the boys will have to step up and play exceptionally well to qualify for the Main Cup quarters. I think the belief in the team is there,” he said.

The coach said the next five weeks will be key as the team will have to improve on strength and conditioning ahead of the two tournaments. “Our fitness levels and conditioning must be good because we play two consecutive tournaments until the end of the season,” added Treu. The team will have 10-day break before resuming training on October 22.
