A shipment of maize from Mexico arrived in the country recently and the offloading of the consignment was witnessed by the Transport PS. When questioned about the source of the maize, the government official is quoted as saying it was maize from Mexico shipped to South Africa. There are also other reports that suggest the imports are surplus maize from South Africa that was given to Kenya.

The official briefed journalists saying the Mexican maize was imported by Kenyan private businessmen, and received by the Government. This has created confusion amongst Kenyans on social media who are now voicing their opinion using the hashtag #maizeimport.
