Kenya's legendary athlete Nyantika Maiyoro, his son Kennedy Nyantika has confirmed.

Maiyoro died on Sunday evening after a long illness and was recently hospitalized at the Christamarianne Hospital in Kisii County after he was diagnosed with tuberculosis.

Mzee Maiyoro is celebrated as Kenya's first Olympian after he represented the country at the 1956 Olympics in Australia.

He went on to win the 3000 metres race at the 1953 Indian Ocean Games in Madagascar in a race which he started late with his fellow runners having been over 100 metres ahead of him.

Our prayers and thoughts goes to his family and friends in these tough times.

Rest in peace legend!
