List is changing: Africa's longest serving presidents

Last week, long serving Sudan leader, Omar al-Bashir was removed from power by the military sending shock waves across the continent.

Bashir's removal from power happened less than two years after the ousting of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe another long serving leader.

This has reduced the number of long serving African presidents and today we take a look at the remaining few.

Paul Biya (Cameroon)

He once served as the country's prime minister before he became the president. He has been in power since 1982.

2. Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo (Equatorial Guinea)

He has been in power since 1979 after he ousted his own uncle  Francisco Macías Nguema in a military coup.

3. Denis Sassou Nguesso (Congo)

Denis has been the President of the Republic of the Congo since 1997. He previously served as president from 1979 to 1992.

4. Yoweri Museveni (Uganda)

Museveni has been at the helm since 1986 and is intending to run again for the top seat in the 2021 general elections.

5.  Idriss Déby (Chad)

Idriss has been the president of Chad since 1990.

6. Paul Kagame (Rwanda)

Kagame is currently the President of Rwanda, having taken office in 2000. He took over after his predecessor, Pasteur Bizimungu, resigned.
