Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp reacts to his side's 4-3 win

A blistering and frenetic 90 minutes of football saw Liverpool overcome the odds to defeat Manchester City at Anfield and become the first side this season to better 's men.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain got the goals started, before star trio Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane and hit the back of the net for Liverpool. Goals came back from the visitors via Leroy Sane, Ilkay Gundogan and Bernando Silva to set up a nervy finish, but the Reds held on.

As the cameras were glued onto every single touch of the football, Sportsmail took a look at the things you may have missed...

Coutinho's space left vacant, but it inspires the Reds to victory

Pre-match images revealed a gaping hole in the Liverpool dressing room where the shirt of Philippe Coutinho used to hang.

Nestled between Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah, Coutinho's space was stripped bare, with his name tag and branding removed.

The eerie space must have been strange for the players when getting ready but they used it to their advantage, stepping up to beat the seemingly unbeatable City.

Pre-match nerves, Pep?

Sitting on the bench while his players went about their pre-match warm up, Pep Guardiola cut a peculiar figure.

The Spaniard was seen rubbing his face and looking far from comfortable.

Pre-match nerves at the prospect of surrendering to a first defeat? Or a mid-January cold, perhaps? Who knows.

Aguero misses sitter as wait for Anfield goal goes on

Despite being one of the most deadly strikers on the planet, Sergio Aguero is yet to hit the back of the net at Anfield.

Much was made of this stat, with many hoping Sunday would be the occasion for the Argentine to set the record straight.

Moments into the first half Aguero very nearly did just that, sliding in to meet a pinpoint Kevin De Bruyne pass... only to let the ball completely pass him by.

When your luck's not in, it's not in.

Comedian's dodgy Salah, Mane, Firmino song gets first airing

The song coined by 'Cork's biggest Liverpool fan' won't have escaped many of you this week, as it did the rounds on social media.

Richy Sheehy came up with the bizarre but catchy version of The Archies hit single and, as expected, it got its first airing at Anfield.

The man himself was present before kick-off, singing on a stage outside the ground which was then captured and uploaded on Liverpool's official Instagram account.

Benjamin Mendy gets trolled

Big-money signing Mendy is well used to making jibes on social media week after week as City rack up the wins - but now the shoe was on the other foot.

Fans took delight in taunting the former Monaco man, who held his hands up and admitted it wasn't a good day for him to be on Twitter.

Posting an gif image of a child shedding a single tear, Mendy simply wrote: 'My mentions today #Lookaway.'

At least he can take it as well as give it out.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the rise

After opening the scoring with an impeccable first half strike, Oxlade-Chamberlain went on to put in a Man of the Match performance.

The England international is flourishing at Anfield, and the statistics don't lie.

He has now scored as many goals in 20 Premier League appearances for Liverpool than in his last 71 appearances for Arsenal. Some transformation.

Pre-match protest against sponsorship with Tibet Water Resources

There is little to complain about at Anfield at the moment, but a pre-match protest did take place.

We're often told there is more to life than football, and this is a solid example.

As part of a campaign led by Tibet groups and international consumer group SumOfUs a mobile billboard was paraded through the streets en route to the game.

It displayed the message 'Under Chinese rule, Tibetans are beaten and tortured for their beliefs. John W. Henry: Your deal with Tibet Water legitimises the torture of Tibetans. Liverpool FC: Do we think this is okay?'
