Mohamed Salah is on the brink of becoming record signing in a deal that could cost £39million.

Salah travelled to Merseyside on Tuesday and is undergoing his medical on Thursday morning ahead of his return to the Premier League.

Recruiting the former Chelsea winger has been a priority for Liverpool, and talks with AS Roma have been ongoing since last month.

The Italian club rejected a £28m offer for the Egyptian at the start of June, but a structured deal has now been agreed which will see Salah overtake Andy Carroll as Liverpool's most expensive player.

Salah, who had the option of joining Liverpool three years ago but opted to work with Jose Mourinho at Chelsea, has agreed terms that will see him double his wages to £90,000 per week.

His arrival will provide more pace, which Jurgen Klopp's side lacked during Sadio Mane's absence last year.

Salah will be Liverpool's second signing of the summer following Dominic Solanke's switch from Chelsea.

Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk had been Klopp's main target but Liverpool were forced to withdraw their interest and apologise amid allegations of tapping up.

Whether that saga — or Liverpool's record-breaking spending — is over remains to be seen. Manager Jurgen Klopp is desperate to sign RB Leipzig midfielder Naby Keita but the Bundesliga club insist he is not for sale.
