Tens of reformed Mungiki adherents from Mathira are shying away from the BVR machines fearing they will be arrested and prosecuted for the past crimes committed.

The youth who have expressed their fears publicly fear that once their finger prints are recorded by the machines, they will be easily tracked by police and arrested.

This has been a major contributor to voter apathy if not well checked.

However, Mathira parliamentary hopeful Rigathi Gachagua who kicked off the voter registration exercise in the area said he had since held a meeting with the security officers in the area to ensure that the youth register.

“Those youths have now reformed; some are even doing very well in churches. After all it is their right to exercise their democracy and elect their favourite candidates. So let them be allowed to register and vote,” Said Rigathi.

Rigathi said his registration drive is aimed to register 30,000 new voters in the constituency to ensure a total of 100,000 votes in the next general election.

He said yesterday that he has deployed 20 youths per polling station for door- to- door exercises in the constituency to ensure that the old and other vulnerable people are registered.

“Others will go even to the health facilities and ensure that even those who are sick are captured by the BVR machines,” he added.

Rigathi vowed to ensure that the 29,000 IDs which are still uncollected in Mathira are collected and ensure they register as voters.
