The KES 4.6 billion health insurance cover for 125,000 police officers has been abruptly suspended.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Nkaissery cancelled the tender on Tuesday morning barely hours after the police tender committee approved it and awarded the contract to a consortium that includes Britam Insurance Company.

No reasons were given for the cancellation.

Interior PS Monicah Juma communicated the decision to Deputy PS Joshua Irungu, who chairs the tender committee.

In her letter, Juma simply states that the tender has been suspended until further communication, according to multiple sources at the Office of the President.

The government plans to issue health insurance cover to 100,000 police officers in the regular and administration police as well as 25,000 prison wardens and their families.
