Transport has been paralyzed along Kitale, Lodwar, Lokichogio and South Sudan route after six trucks were swept by flood waters.
Three trucks ferrying goods from Juba, South Sudan to Lodwar and three trucks from Kitale to Lodwar were swept by Kawalase and Malimalite rivers that burst their banks as a result of heavy downpour in Turkana.
Goods worth millions of shillings were swept by flood waters and no casualties were reported as all the drivers were saved.
Travelers and traders plying to Kitale- Lodwar-Lokichogio- South Sudan route are counting heavy losses as they have to wait for more than 15 hours for water to subside.
The Kainuk bridge that links Kenya with South Sudan, Ethiopia and Uganda has been rendered impassable as river Malimalite has flooded.
Reaching out for a comment from County Director of Trade, James Lokwale said Transport trucks plying Lokichoggio-Lodwar, Lodwar-Kitale and Lodwar-Moroto (Uganda) are spending hours on end waiting for flash floods to subside.
"The impassable Kainuk drift has led to scarcity of food stuffs in Lodwar and hiking of prices of essential commodities like fuel, milk, sugar and vegetables." Lokwale said.
He said as a result, perishable commodities like onions tomatoes have gone bad as they cannot get to the markets on time.
Lokwale said a temporary drift at Kainuk, along the Kitale-Lokichar-Nadapal corridor has been damaged completely.
