A group of residents have sued the government for failing to reopen the Garissa University College.

The college was closed indefinitely after an al shabaab attack on April 2 where 148 people, most of them students, were killed.

In an application filed by the residents’ lawyers Hassan Sheikh Ali and Abdi Yalahow at the High Court in Nairobi on Thursday, they said their children are missing out on their right to education.

They sued Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, Attorney General Githu Muigai and the Teachers Service Commission.

“Since the closure of GUC due to the terror attack, there exists no ISO certified institution in Garissa and Wajir,” Omar said.

High court judge Joseph Onguto certified the case as urgent and directed the case file be transferred to the High Court in Garissa.
