When the Duchess of Sussex stepped on to the pitch grass at Dublin's Croke Park earlier this week in spiky stilettos, it seemed surprising she didn't opt for more causal footwear.
However, the royal is devoted to her heels for a crucial reason - her seven-inch height difference with Prince Harry.
Meghan stands at 5ft 6in while her husband is a towering 6ft 1in, and the canny former actress knows how a height discrepancy between two people can create an 'unbalanced' look in pictures.
Celebrity photographer Glenn Gratton told Femail: 'Couples with a big height difference look slightly unbalanced in pictures , and often the smaller of the two ends up looking even smaller and is constantly looking up at their partner.
'Rod Stewart and his wife penny have a large gap but this is minimised by rod wearing Cuban heels and penny not wearing super high heels.
'In the case of Harry and Meghan she will be wearing high heels to maximise her height and shorten the gap if possible.'
The Duchess is also a fan of high waisted, midi length pencil skirts that create a long clean line.
'Careful use of wardrobe choices will be important for harry and Meghan to make the couples height difference is minimised,' Glenn added.
'The shape of skirts will also give the optical illusion to make her look taller than she actually is.'
He added that certain situations for couples where one is significantly taller than the other.
'Red carpet pictures can be exaggerated as they will be shot on a wide angle lens so it makes the height difference look more than it is,' he explained.
Meghan's sister-in-law Kate is known to don trainers or loafers when she attends sporting engagements, but the Duchess is taller than the average British woman.
Kate stands at around 5ft 10in while William is 6ft 2in, meaning she can comfortably wear heels without being taller or sport flats and not feel there's a gaping discrepancy.
