Deputy President William Ruto has intensified voter registration campaigns in the South Rift region, including long-time rival Governor Isaac Rutto's Bomet county.

Ruto asked county commissioners to take the lead in ensuring eligible citizens get ID cards.

He said no one should be denied an IDs just because some "petty" documents were missing.

"The ID of whoever doesn't have the certificates required but is known personally should be processed immediately because it will only take four days upon application to acquire it," he said.

"We want to meet the set target of registered voters here," he added as he kicked off the voter registration drive at Chemamit in Transmara, before heading to Gorgor in Sotik, Bomet county.

Ruto took the opportunity to drum up support for Jubilee, in the region perceived to be popular with Governor Rutto's Chama Cha Mashinani party.

The DP told residents to vote for aspirants vying under the Jubilee ticket ahead of the August 8 poll.

"You have best-suited candidates here: National Assembly deputy Speaker Joyce Laboso and Pipeline corporation chair Julius Kones. Vote for them. Why should you vote for individuals who are always out to divide us?" he said.

"You should not waste your votes on someone who does not mean good for you and is always fighting the government."

Rutto has differed with the DP in public. Their differences were caused by factors including the decision to dissolve URP for Jubilee Party.

The DP was with Energy CS Charles Keter, Bomet Speaker Geoffrey Kipng'etich, Kericho Governor, Deputy Governor Paul Chepkwony and Stephen Mutai.

Others were Senators Wilfred Lesan (Bomet), Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho), Bomet woman rep Cecilia Ngetich and a host of MPs and MCAs.

Laboso and Kones are Jubilee party's top contenders for the seat which Rutto will defend on a CCM ticket.
