Bodaboda Operator Who Rode From Kerugoya To Naivasha To Visit Girlfriend Crashed To Death

A motorcycle operator who rode from Kerugoya to Naivasha to visit his girlfriend was on Sunday night crashed by a speeding trailer along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road.

The 30-year-old died on the spot while the trailer sped off from the scene as cases of fatal road accidents involving the operators continue to rise.

Three weeks ago, three operators were hit and killed by motorists along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway in three different cases.

In the latest incident, the operator had driven from Kerugoya over 200kms when the accident occurred near Maili Mbili center along the busy road.

A driver of a matatu Abel Mwaura said that the operator had been overtaking a fleet of vehicles before he was hit by the trailer.

“The driver of the trailer did not realize that he had hit the operator and sped off leaving the man to bleed to death,” he said.

Meanwhile, a group of passengers heading to Nairobi from Nakuru were on Sunday subjected to a three hour horror ordeal after a group of thugs carjacked a Nissan matatu there were travelling in.

The thugs who were allegedly armed with a gun and other crude weapons robbed the passengers before dumping them in the suburbs of Naivasha town.

The four thugs who had boarded the matatu in Nakuru town later fled the scene before the shaken passengers reported the matter to Naivasha police station.

The incident came barely a fortnight after another group of thugs carjacked another matatu near Kinale forest on the same highway and robbed the passengers.

A passenger only identified as Ibrahim narrated how one of the thugs called on the driver to allow him to take a call of nature before turning against him.

He said that the driver was ordered out of his seat and the vehicle was driven off the highway where they were beaten and robbed during the 11pm incident.

“The thugs even had the guts to transfer all the cash in our Mpesa to their phones before escaping with all our personal effects and cash,” he said.

Naivasha OCPD Samuel Waweru confirmed the two incidents adding that in the carjacking cases no suspects had been arrested.

“We are following up the carjacking case while in the accident case the body was collected and taken to Naivasha sub-county hospital mortuary,” he said.

Man Handed Three Years Jail Term For Killing UoN Student While Avoiding Alcoblow

A quantity surveyor will spend three years in jail or pay a Sh350,000 fine for killing a university student along Thika Superhighway in 2016.

Job Wangila was found guilty of killing Brian Kiambati, who was a third year engineering student at the University of Nairobi.

A Nairobi court heard on Monday that he made a wrong U-turn in attempt to evade the alcoblow test but collided head-on with a vehicle in which Kiambati had been travelling.

Parties broke into tears before Senior Resident Magistrate Elector Riani.

Riani noted Wangila had been driving on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred in Kasarani area.

“The postmortem report shows the deceased died of head and chest injuries. It’s evident that the accused was driving carelessly.”

Asked to give his views to counter mitigation by the Wangila’s advocate, the student’s father Wilson Kiambati said “no amount of punishment can bring back Brian”.

In an interview with the press after the judgment, the father added that the justice he wanted for his son had been served.

But the victim’s mother Liliana Maina said the conviction did not match the pain the family suffered.

The court relied heavily on testimonies by Citizen TV crew who covered a crackdown on drink-driving.

SAD: 34 Perish On New Year’s Eve In Another Salgaa Accident

Thirty-four people have perished in yet another grisly road accident at the notorious Salgaa blackspot on Sunday morning after the bus they were travelling in collided head-on with a trailer.

At least 28 died on the spot while six others lost their lives while undergoing treatment at the Nakuru Level Five Hospital and Molo Sub-County Hospital.

Kenya Redcross tweeted that 18 passengers were rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.

“Our ambulance teams responded to the scene and evacuated 18 casualties to Molo and Nakuru hospitals. The accident involved a lorry and a bus. More rescue efforts continue.”

Among the dead are 34 passengers who were aboard the ill-fated bus belonging to Matunda Bus while the other two are the driver of the trailer and his loader.

Preliminary reports said the accident occurred at around 3:30 am after the bus which was travelling from Busia collided with the trailer at Migaa area, some 3 kilometres from the notorious Salgaa on the Nakuru-Eldoret highway.

The bus, which was reportedly speeding, was being driven on the wrong lane.

The latest accident comes just a day after three bishops died on Friday night on the Embu-Makutano road after their saloon car collided head-on with another vehicle.

The accident brings to well over 200 the number of people who have lost their lives in road accidents in the month of December.

NTSA is considering converting the 20km stretch between Sachangwan and Salgaa to a dual carriageway to minimize the unending accidents along the stretch.
