Wakanda forever! Masked Aubameyang sends Arsenal to quarter-finals

Arsenal yesterday cruised to the quarter finals of the Europa League with a three nil win over Rennes at the Emirates.

The Gunners needed a two nil win over the French side to cruise to the last eight and showed statement of intent minutes after kick off with Pierre Emerick Aubameyang giving them a one nil and minutes later Ainsley Maitland Niles doubled the lead.

Aubameyang added his second of the night after the break.

It really did not require a super hero to send Arsenal through in Europe on Thursday night. Still, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is as near as they have got to one around these parts, so it was only right that he should get to score the goals, and wear the mask, that confirmed their superiority.

Until Aubameyang claimed his second of the night after 76 minutes, Arsenal were relying on UEFA’s away goals rule to secure their progress into the last eight. Aubameyang gave them an outright aggregate win. He celebrated by plucking a Black Panther mask from behind a hoarding, pulling it on and performing the crossed armed Wakanda Forever salute.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang scored twice for Arsenal as they reached the Europa League quarter-final stages

No matter. Wakanda is a fictional sub-Saharan African state invented by Marvel Comics, and the birthplace of their first black superhero. Since Black Panther became a hugely successful film, the Wakanda Forever sign has come to signify black excellence.

Aubameyang, born in France of Gabonese heritage, certainly represents that. This was his 32nd goal in 53 appearances for Arsenal, and in his last 13 home games, he has been directly involved in 15 goals: scoring 11, with four assists. He was the difference again on Thursday night, getting Arsenal off to the flyer they needed, then picking off Rennes in the second half just when they had started to look dangerous.

Aubameyang clearly has a thing for superheroes – and masks. He was Spider-Man in a celebration at Saint-Etienne and Batman with Borussia Dortmund, but Black Panther looks to be the one that will stick, not least as it is a named shared by the Gabonese national team.

‘I needed a mask that represents me,’ Aubameyang said after.

Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud scored a hat-trick as Chelsea thrashed Dynamo Kiev five nil to move into the Europa League quarter-finals with a eight nil aggregate win.

The France forward’s early effort from Willian’s corner set the tone for the Blues, who arrived in Kiev with a commanding three nil lead from the first leg.

Giroud swept in his second of the night from Marcos Alonso’s sublime cross to register his eighth goal in the competition this season. With the visitors in total control, Alonso tapped in a third goal from Callum Hudson-Odoi’s cross before the break.

Chelsea will discover their quarter-final and potential semi-final opponents today at 3pm.

Salah has been in sparkling form for both club and country and has emerged as the favorites to win the award. The award ceremony will be held on 4th of January in Ghana.

CAF also decided that the categories for Player of the Year Based in Africa and for referees should be removed from list of awards. Nigeria, Egypt and Cameroon will battle for the team of the year.

Top 10 Footballers With Sexy Hair Cuts Featuring; Aubameyang, Ronaldo & Giroud

We brought to you the weirdly funny story of Ghana national team captain, Asamoah Gyan who among 40 other players was found guilty of having  “unethical hair” under United Arab Emirates Football Association (UAEFA) guidelines.

Some Islamic teachings ban ‘Qaza’ hairstyles, where only part of the head is shaved. Individual match referees judge whether players’ haircuts are appropriate.

Some match officials in the United Arab Emirates enforce the rules because they are concerned about children copying the styles.

Asamoah Gyan Found Guilty Of Having ‘Unethical Hair’

Well, instead of focusing on the banned hair styles, why don’t we look on the positive side and have a look at top 10 footballers who rock the sexiest hair cuts…? (No Homo)

Here’s a quick hint; If Pogba had been playing in the UAE, we would be spared from his a million and one bright colored hair styles.

Born Pierre-Emerick Emiliano François Aubameyang, is a 27-year-old French-born Gabonese professional footballer who plays for German club, Borussia Dortmund, as well as the Gabon National Football Team. He normally rocks a number of funky mohawks and was often referred to as the African Neymar thanks to his football skills.

You can never write/ talk about looks and hair styles in football without mentioning this 32-year-old former Manchester United forward. The ladies man deserves needs enough credit for being the reason more ladies actually watch football.

The Real Madrid forward is probably the real metro sexual and his hair cuts are emulated the world over by fellow footballers and his proteges.

28-year-old. Mesut Ozil, plays for Arsenal Football Club and ever since he shot into the football scene, the German machine has seen his fashion taste mature along with his skills on the field. Having broken out with a shoulder long hair style, the former Madrid midfielder has been rocking a variety of epic hair cuts which have played a major part in his massive social media following.

He’s known as the ladies man and the photo below might explain why;

Speaking of ladiess men, Giroud is among a few more footballers who would give Ozil a run for his money. The French forward is a professional model himself and he’s been ranked as one of the most good looking footballers in England and he makes sure of that thanks to his eye-catching hair cuts.

The Manchester United forward is often described as the man who ages like fine wine. He seems to get better with age and his little ponytail doesn’t look like it will disappoint anytime soon.

Marco Reus

Famed for his versatility, technique, and speed, 27-years-old Reus is a German professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder, winger or striker for German club, Borussia Dortmund and the Germany National Team. His hair cuts are a blend between versatility and technique.

Born, Neymar da Silva Santos Júnior, commonly known as Neymar or Neymar Jr., he is a 25-year-old Brazilian professional footballer who terrorizes defenders while playing for Spanish club, FC Barcelona and the Brazilian National Team.

He was one of the star players across Europe who adopted the Mohawk hairstyle whose origin is believed to be Africa!

Gerard Pique

I know most of you will dispute this but the Barcelona defender’s hair cuts somehow seem to drive a bevy of beauties crazy not forgetting he’s the man who is married to pop star singer, Shakira.

Sergio Ramos

Seems like the list will be filled by Spanish internationals as the 30-year-old Real Madrid’s king of late goals sneaks in thanks to his neat beard.

David De Gea

I know most of you Manchester United fans would be baying for my warm blood if I hadn’t included your goal keeping prince charming. De Gea is probably the only goalkeeper with a dope sense of style, from his fashion sense to his looks which trickle down to his splendid hair cuts.

Aubameyang Rules Out Arsenal Move

Borussia Dortmund striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang says he is happy in Germany and will not be leaving the club for Arsenal or Barcelona.

The Gabon international and African Footballer of the Year has scored 18 goals in 17 league games this season.

“I still want to achieve lots with Dortmund. I am here and nowhere else – not at Arsenal, not at Barcelona, not on the moon – you can see that,” Aubameyang said.

Aubameyang has a contract at Dortmund until 2020 and is yet to win any significant silverware since his move from Saint-Etienne in 2013.

It had been reported that Arsenal were willing to pay a sizeable transfer fee to sign the striker, but such a move now appears unlikely.

Caped Aubameyang strikes as Dortmund down Schalke

Gabon star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang was happy to play Borussia Dortmund’s ‘superhero’ on Saturday by netting in their 3-0 home win over Schalke 04 in the Ruhr Valley derby.

Dortmund climbed to ninth in the table after picking up their fourth consecutive league win after starting February bottom of the table.

After going close with a string of chances, Dortmund finally got the breakthrough when Aubameyang — who had compared winning the derby to ‘an orgasm’ in midweek — pounced on a mistake in the visitors’ defence to roll the ball home on 78 minutes.

It was his fifth goal in as many league games and the 25-year-old celebrated by donning a ‘Batman’ hat, playing up to his ‘caped crusader’ nickname, while team-mate Marco Reus wore a ‘Robin’ mask to play his side-kick.

“If you didn’t know who Batman and Robin were before, you do now,” joked Aubameyang as it emerged Dortmund’s assistant coach Zeljko Buvac had hidden the costumes behind the Schalke goal.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan made it 2-0 a minute later when he slid home Ilkay Gundogan’s cross to claim his first goal of the season.

Reus, who had crashed a shot against the crossbar, fired wide and had a shot blocked in the first half, finally got on the scoresheet by poaching Borussia’s third on 86 minutes to score for the fifth match running in all competitions.

Schalke’s 19-year-old goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther paused too long over a back-pass and Reus simply tapped the ball into the empty net behind the despairing teenager.

The defeat drops Schalke, who were missing several stars with injury, to fifth while neighbours Dortmund are now just seven points adrift of the European places.

“That was exactly the result I had hoped for when I woke up this morning,” beamed Dortmund coach Jurgen Klopp.

Elsewhere, Bayer Leverkusen built on their shock Champions League win over Atletico Madrid on Wednesday with a 1-0 win at home to strugglers Freiburg to go fourth.

Veteran midfielder Simon Rolfes, who will retire at the end of the season, grabbed a first-half winner to give Leverkusen their first league win in four games.

Augsburg dropped to sixth after their 1-0 defeat at Hertha Berlin as ex-Chelsea striker Salomon Kalou scored a late winner at the Olympic Stadium to claim his sixth goal of the season.

Stuttgart stay bottom after their 1-1 draw at Hanover 96 while Hoffenheim are just two points short of the European places for next season after their 2-0 win at home to Mainz.

On Friday, Bayern Munich celebrated their 115th birthday with a 4-1 win over Cologne to go 11 points clear before second-placed Wolfsburg go to resurgent Werder Bremen on Sunday.

Arjen Robben netted his 17th goal in 19 league matches this season with a crisp header with 20 minutes left to remain the league’s top scorer.

Earlier, captain Bastian Schweinsteiger gave hosts Bayern an early lead at the Allianz Arena before Franck Ribery added a second inside 10 minutes.

Cologne fought back when Nigeria international Anthony Ujah scored right on the stroke of half-time but Bayern roared back as Robben then Poland striker Robert Lewandowski extended their lead.

AFCON 2015: Aubaemyang Wants To Emulate Drogba & Eto’o

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has said he aims to emulate Didier Drogba and Samuel Eto’o after he led Gabon to beat Burkina Faso 2-0 in an AFCON 2015 Group A match in Bata.

Aubameyang set Azingo National on the path to victory when he scored after 18 minutes and he was also involved in the second goal netted by Malick Evouna in the second half after he initiated the attack from which Frederic Bulot delivered a cross from the right for the WAC Casablanca of Morocco striker to head home.

Aubameyang finished second behind Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure in the 2014 CAF African Player of the Year and he also made the final five nominees for the 2013 awards.

“I try to do the maximum so as to be a big star like Drogba and Eto’o,” said the Borussia Dortmund forward moments after he inspired his country to go past one of the top teams at this tournament.

“In the warm-up (for the match), the fans cheered me. That is not pressure. It’s expectation for me as it motivates me and pushes me to shine.

“When people expect big things from you, you try to do big things.”

Three years ago, co-hosts Gabon crashed out of the quarterfinals of the competition after a penalty shootout against Mali with Aubameyang missing the decisive penalty that would have catapulted them to the semi-finals.

He said that penalty miss has made him to grow up and he hopes that should Gabon again reach the last eight and need to go through on penalties again, he will put his kick away.

“That miss helped me to grow up very quickly,” he said.

“But for this competition, we are starting from the scratch. It’s a new tournament and it has begun well for me with a goal.

“I hope we reach the quarterfinal again and if we got another penalty then, I will score it.”

He said the big difference between victory and defeat against Burkina Faso was that their final pass was good and they took their chances against a Burkina Faso side, who failed to do same.

AFCON 2015: Burkina Faso Is Not Out Yet, Says Kabore

Burkina Faso captain Charles Kabore. | image source:

Burkina Faso skipper Charles Kabore has said his team may have lost their opening Group A match at AFCON 2015, but they have not been eliminated from the competition.

Gabon beat the AFCON 2013 finalists on Saturday in Bata with goals in either half by skipper Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Milick Evouna.

However, Kabore has insisted they could still qualify from this group despite this initial setback.

“This competition is not yet over for us,” declared the Russia-based midfielder.

“We are all disappointed we had a lot of chances, but we were not lucky and not precise in front of goal.

“But we still have two more games, so is not over yet.

“Were we to win against the host nation (on Wednesday), then everything will be back on track for us. We cannot lose hope.

“If we won our next two games, we will be through to the next round.”

Burkina Faso are now bottom of the standings after hosts Equatorial Guinea were forced to a 1-1 draw by Congo in the opening match of the tournament.
