Brazil Hands Chile A Devastating 3-0 Defeat As Sanchez And Company Miss Out On World Cup

Alexis Sanchez and Chile will have to watch the World Cup from home after being dumped out of qualifying on a night of high drama in South America.

With all eyes on Lionel Messi and Argentina, who faced the real prospect of missing out on the tournament but ultimately made it through after coming from behind to beat Ecuador, Paulinho and Gabriel Jesus struck for a Brazil side long assured of their place to ensure Chile were the major casualties as they missed out on a play-off on goal difference as they were pipped by Peru.

Paulinho profited from an error by Chile goalkeeper Claudio Bravo to poke home the first before Manchester City man Jesus found an open net just two minutes later following a stunning piece of skill from Neymar.

Chile could find no answer as they desperately searched for a route to Russia, with Bravo sent up in search of a goal, but as play broke down Brazil cleared to Jesus who beat the Chilean goalkeeper in a foot race to find an empty net.

The back-to-back Copa America winners sunk to their knees and lay flat out on the turf at the final whistle, with the team ranked ninth in the world facing up to the prospect of having to watch next summer’s football festival from home.

Manchester City To Rekindle Interest In Arsenal Forward Alexis Sanchez In January With Reduced £20m

Manchester city under pep Guardiola will return to Arsenal with a £20m offer for 28 year old Sanchez in January.

The Arsenal striker saw a late £60million deadline day move to City collapse when Arsenal failed to bring in a replacement in time, despite offering £92m for Monaco’s Thomas Lemar.

The Chile forward has one year left on his contract and will negotiate with foreign clubs in January, with the 28-year-old ready to re-unite with his former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.

Arsenal staff and players have grown increasingly exasperated at the saga surrounding Sanchez, who has spoken out against the national media in Chile after he faced further criticism following his country’s 1-0 defeat to Bolivia on Tuesday.

The result leaves their World Cup qualifying chances in serious doubt.

Sanchez is in line to make his first competitive appearance at the Emirates Stadium of the season this weekend when Arsenal host Bournemouth on Saturday.

Defeat against the Cherries is unthinkable for Arsenal and their manager. The club is already surrounded by unrest but a third defeat in four games would make Arsene Wenger’s decision to stay in the summer increasingly misguided.

World Champions Germany Beat Chile To Win Their First Ever Confederations Cup

Lars Stindl struck the only goal as Germany beat Chile 1-0 to win the Confederations Cup in St Petersburg.

Borussia Monchengladbach forward Stindl tapped home against the run of play after a defensive blunder midway through the first half as world champions Germany added another major trophy to their collection.

Copa America winners Chile wasted a glut of goalscoring chances in either half and with the help of a superb stoppage-time save from goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Joachim Low’s side held on to win the tournament for the first time.

After the two sides drew their group game 1-1 10 days ago Chile made the brighter start in the rematch and were clearly the better side throughout most of the first period.

Alexis Sanchez flashed a shot wide in the second minute, Arturo Vidal’s effort from inside the penalty area was parried by Ter Stegen and Eduardo Vargas fired over the crossbar from 25 yards.

Another effort from Vargas was well held by Ter Stegen as Chile looked the more likely to break the deadlock.

Ter Stegen then spilled Vidal’s shot from outside the area into the path of Sanchez, but the Arsenal forward could not control the rebound and another chance went begging.

Moments later Germany snatched a 20th-minute lead with their first meaningful effort on goal.

Chile defender Marcelo Diaz gifted Timo Werner the ball on the edge of the box and the Germany striker ran on and turned the ball across goal for Stindl to tap into an empty net.

The South Americans carved open the German defence again four minutes later, but the final ball into the box from Mauricio Isla flew beyond Charles Aranguiz with an equaliser beckoning.

Man City Keeper Saves Three Portugal Penalties To Send Chile Into Confederations Cup Finals

Chile are into the Confederations Cup final after the semi with Portugal in Kazan was decided by Claudio Bravo’s penalty shoot-out saves.

Chile were faultless from the spot as Arturo Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez scored.

The South American champions had come closest to winning the contest in open play when Vidal hit the post in the penultimate minute of extra-time and Martin Rodriguez struck the bar with the follow-up.

Portugal had earlier escaped when Iranian official Alireza Faghani opted not to ask the video assistant referee to review a challenge by Jose Fonte on Francisco Silva, which should have been a penalty.

Arturo Vidal Hits Out At Cristiano Ronaldo Insisting That He Doesn’t Exist To Him Ahead Of Confederations Cup Last Four

Chile talisman Arturo Vidal has condemned Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the two sides coming together on Wednesday.

The South American Copa America winners take on their European Euro 2016 counterparts at the Kazan Arena in the Confederations Cup semi-final, held in Russia.

And ahead of that match, Vidal has blasted Portugal’s No 7 as a ‘smart a**’ and even predicted that Chile will bypass them en-route to facing Germany in Sunday’s final – despite the World Cup winners having to play Mexico in Thursday’s other semi-final.

Ronaldo has scored twice and set up another for Fernando Santos’ side but that hasn’t impressed Vidal.

‘Cristiano is a smart a**!’ Vidal told reporters in Russia. ‘For me he does not exist.

‘I have already told my Bayern Munich team-mate [and Germany international] Joshua Kimmich that we will meet again in the final!’

Vidal’s encounter with Ronaldo will be he his first since April when the former was sent off for Bayern Munich as they were knocked out in the Champions League quarter-finals by eventual winners Real Madrid.

CONFEDERATIONS CUP: Sanchez Becomes Chile Leading Scorer In A 1-1 Draw With Germany

Alexis Sanchez became Chile’s all-time leading scorer as they were held by Germany to 1-1 in the Confederations Cup on Thursday. Both teams were in a good position to make the semifinals.

Sanchez netted his 38th goal for Chile after a smart pass by Arturo Vidal in the sixth minute. The ball hit the near post before crossing the line to allow him to eclipse Marcelo Salas as the highest scorer for the national team.

“It makes me very happy to have become the team’s greatest scorer,” Sanchez said. “I’m happy for what the team has done, for our effort. We are confident that we can win this tournament.”

Suffering from an ankle sprain, Sanchez did not start the first game of the pre-World Cup tournament, playing only a few minutes in the win over Cameroon.

Germany, with only three players from its 2014 World Cup-winning team, played catch-up most of time against the more experienced Chileans, but earned the draw after Lars Stindl scored from close range in a counterattack just before halftime.

The result left both teams with four points each in Group B, three more than Australia and Cameroon, which played out a 1-1 draw hours earlier in St. Petersburg.

Chile Beat Argentina Yet Again To Win Second Successive Copa America Title

Lionel Messi sat down on the substitutes bench, tears in his eyes. The wait goes on. He may never now win a trophy with Argentina. And this time, he has to share some of the blame. After Chile won their second successive Copa America title against Argentina, 2-4 post match penalties after a 0-0 after extra time draw.

Messi took Argentina’s first penalty in the shoot-out, after Arturo Vidal had missed the opening spot-kick for Chile. He fired right, Bravo went left. But the ball sailed high, over the crossbar and into the stands.

When Claudio Bravo made an excellent save from Lucas Biglia’s penalty, the game was up, with Francisco Silva converting Chile’s fifth to win the Copa America Centenario, just as they did last year.

Argentina have gone 23 years without a trophy and Messi will have no better chance than he had here to win one. When they head to Russia for the World Cup in 2018 he will be 31.

Chile, meanwhile, waited 99 years to win a Copa America, lifted the trophy in Santiago and now have done it again in New Jersey, in the special 100th year edition of the tournament.

Argentina defender Marcos Rojo was shown a straight red card for a wild challenge just before half-time

Referee Heber Lopes made himself the star of the show in the first half, showing two red cards which he should have held back on.

Diaz obstructed Messi in the 29th minute, a foul, certainly, but a harsh yellow for just his second offence. For a moment it seemed Lopes had forgotten he booked him in the first half, even though the cards were just 12 minutes apart, but out came the red card and Chilean supporters raged.

But things were levelled up on that front just before half-time. Marcos Rojo took out Vidal with a sliding challenge from behind. It was a yellow card offence but he saw red. Ten men each.
