Europa League: 10-man Arsenal thrashed by Rennes in their last 16 tie

Arsenal yesterday suffered a 3-1 defeat in the hands of French side Rennes in the first leg of Europa League round of sixteen played in France.

Alex Iwobi gave the visitors a perfect start before the host drew level through Benjamin Bourigeaud strike and things went from bad to worse for the Gunners as defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos was sent off for a second bookable offence.

Rennes added two more goals after the break to remain in control of the fixture heading to return leg at the Emirates. Elsewhere Chelsea beat Dynamo Kiev three nil.

Arsenal’s Torreira to serve three-game ban after appeal against red card is rejected

Arsenal's players look dejected after falling behind during Thursday's disappointing Europa League defeat by Rennes

Arsenal are in big trouble and only a remarkable salvage operation at the Emirates next week can keep their Europa League hopes alive.

The problem for manager Unai Emery is that Rennes are a team brimming with swagger and ability – and they look more than capable of finishing the job in the second leg.

Emery will back his team to reach the quarter-finals but on this evidence – despite playing with 10 men following Sokratis’ sending off just before half-time – overturning the deficit could well be beyond Arsenal.

Emery said: ‘We know it’s a bad result and it’s going to be tough. It’s not a good experience because we couldn’t do our work in difficult minutes with one less player.’

In France for the first time since leaving Paris Saint-Germain, Emery fielded a strong team that included Mesut Ozil, whose reintegration under the Spaniard appeared to be gathering pace until this showing.

Ozil reverted to type – crumbling at the first sight of difficulty. Emery feels he cannot trust Ozil on tough away days and it is easy to see why.

Rennes have their own maverick, of course. Hatem Ben Arfa, who fell out with Emery in the pair’s time together at PSG, started for the French side.

He said: ‘I saw the same Emery, as agitated as ever. I looked over at him a few times and that made me laugh. He hasn’t changed.’

But it was Ben Arfa’s team-mate, Benjamin Bourigeaud, who stole the show. He was untouchable at times and starred in the game that was billed as the biggest occasion in the French club’s 118-year history.

Europa League: Arsenal and Chelsea register huge wins

Arsenal yesterday cruised to a three nil win over Vorskla Poltava of Ukraine in a Europa League. Smith Rowe opened the scoring ten minutes after kick off before Aaron Ramsey doubled the lead in the 27th minute from the spot.

Joe Willock scored the third goal towards half time to ensure the Gunners secure top place in their group with one match to go.

After all the chaos ahead of this Europa League encounter, it was calmness from Arsenal’s unfazed youngsters that finally put an end to the Poltava palaver once and for all.

Unai Emery’s side won to ensure they qualify top of Group E, with two teenagers in Emile Smith Rowe and Joe Willock scoring to extend their unbeaten run to 18 games.

It was –10C at kick-off and at one point, the referee had to replace his can of spray because it was frozen stiff. Nevertheless, Arsenal’s team of starlets kept their cool in the icy conditions.

Arsenal will now head into their Premier League meeting with Tottenham Hotspur looking to make it 19 matches unbeaten. Emery knows it will be nowhere near as easy as this.

Elsewhere, Olivier Giroud scored a brace as Chelsea beat Paok Salonika four nil at Stamford Brige. Hudson Odoi and Alvaro Morata were on target too.

Callum Hudson-Odoi may only be 18 years old and the opponents, admittedly, were porous after being reduced to 10 men inside seven minutes, but this remained a performance to remember from a teenager who formed an integral part of England’s Under 17 World Cup triumph last year.

The winger had previously been limited to only 35 minutes of Europa League action this season and has not appeared in the Premier League or Carabao Cup. His slow progress has frustrated fans and the pressure on Sarri to hand more opportunities to the player will only grow after this display.

Europa League: Welbeck injured as Arsenal and Chelsea progress into round of 32

Arsenal drew this Europa League clash against Sporting Lisbon – but that was the last thing on anyone’s mind.

Instead, thoughts were firmly with Danny Welbeck, who is facing another arduous road back to fitness after suffering a sickening ankle injury in the first half.

It was one of those injuries you wish you never saw. One that you cannot erase from memory no matter how hard you try. Welbeck was taken straight to hospital, but you didn’t need to be medically trained to realise the severity of his injury. We’re looking at months, rather than weeks.

Given Welbeck’s entering the final six months of his contract, and the gruesome photos of his ankle twisted in the wrong direction – you wonder if we’ll ever see him in an Arsenal shirt again.

But that’s a debate for an altogether different day. Right now, you simply hope Welbeck makes a full recovery.

Unai Emery confirmed: ‘This is the worst news, it’s clear we are all with him. He’s in hospital, we think it is serious ankle injury.

‘When a player has an injury like that, your mind thinks of the player but we had to concentrate on the game and try to forget.

‘But after the final whistle we asked about him straight away.’

Meanwhile, Arsenal’s London rivals, Chelsea, all but booked their round of 32 spot after former Gunners forward, Olivier Giroud scored the lone goal against Bate Borisov.

For Giroud, it marked the end of a personal ordeal, as he scored his first Chelsea goal for 794 minutes – a run that stretched all the way back to May. For Chelsea, the relief was palpable.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says he has not been approached by Real Madrid over their vacant managerial position.

Real Madrid Castilla manager Santiago Solari has been installed as the interim boss at the Santiago Bernabeu following the sacking of Julen Lopetegui last month. But newspaper reports in Spain claim the Champions League winners are in search of a long-term replacement.

Wenger dismissed claims he has been contacted by Real Madrid and reiterated he would make a decision on his future in the new year.

Griezmann signs off in style ahead of Barca move as his double helps seal Europa League for Atletico

If this is to be Antoine Griezmann’s final game for Atletico Madrid, he can certainly count on a warm welcome each and every time he returns to the Wanda Metropolitano in his red-and-blue striped shirt.

The Frenchman, who is expected to join Barcelona this summer, had not won a single major honour with Diego Simeone’s side before Wednesday night, but can now leave with his name securely placed in Atletico folklore after an inspirational display to seal the Europa League.

Griezmann netted either side of half-time, first thanks to a mistake from Marseille’s Andre Zambo Anguissa and the second the result of a neat one-two with the equally talented playmaker Koke. The match was won by the time Gabi thundered in the third in the 89th minute to allow celebrations to begin early.

griezzyy

For the two enfant terribles in the recent history of the Premier League, this Europa League final threw up two sorely contrasting evenings.

For Diego Costa, the pitbull of a striker that terrorised Antonio Conte and endured six weeks without pay as he began his season in hiding in his Brazilian hometown, this became a night to justify all his mumbling and grumbling.

After escaping Chelsea, he is back home with the club he adores, the manager, Diego Simeone, who he respects above all and a trophy in his hands once more. He is now certain to form part of the Spain squad at this summer’s World Cup.

As for Dimitri Payet, the dazzling playmaker that stole the hearts of West Ham supporters before tearing them apart, this was a night of heartache.

Payet, the Marseille captain, has a similar story to Costa, a similar attachment to a club where he is now in his second spell and he arrived in Lyon yearning to clutch the trophy. As he walked out before the game, Payet committed one of football folklore’s well-established sins, touching the trophy as he passed it by. Bad luck, that, they say, and so it proved here.

“The Manager Is Leaving And The Club Is Trophyless!” Paul Kagame Opens Up About His Love For Arsenal

Rwanda president Paul Kagame is one of the most outspoken African leaders we have.

If he is not addressing matters politics, he is busy talking about his beloved club Arsenal. On Thursday night a disappointed Kagame took to twitter to weigh on the predicament that had befell Arsenal after they failed to qualify to the finals of Europa League finals.

Though disappointed, he still expressed his love for Arsenal but bemoaned the fact that outgoing manager, Arsene Wenger will not be bowing out of the club after 22 years with an European trophy.

He praised the club’s style of play and chose not to blame the manager as well but he signed off his tweet by saying people should simply blame the club owners.

Read his tweet below.

My take on my beloved Club Arsenal- a very good one at the game and a very good coach like a.Wenger ,this should not have been the kind of ending of an era. The coach is leaving and club trophy-less it was long coming! I am still a committed fan going forward :). Blame the owners.

Wenger distraught after ‘very sad’ Europa League exit as Arsenal boss rues ‘stupid goal’

Arsene Wenger admitted to feeling ‘very, very hurt’ after Arsenal were dumped out of the Europa League by Atletico Madrid.

There was to be no fairytale ending for the Frenchman who will leave the club after 22 years without a European trophy as the Spanish side ground out a 1-0 victory (2-1 aggregate) at Wanda Metropolitano Stadium.

‘It is very, very sad but unfortunately you have to go through this in our game. It can be very cruel but sometimes it is nice. The suffering is very strong tonight,’ Wenger told BT Sport.

He added: ‘It was a similar game to what we had in the first leg. The dangerous situations we created were there but we missed something in both boxes.

premier-league-football-arsenal-arsene-wenger_3799589

‘We played a good team and good luck to them in the final but we feel we did enough to go through. We didn’t manage the important moments of either game well.

‘We were 1-0 up with 10 minutes to go at home, and then we conceded a stupid goal. Tonight we looked OK and then conceded on the counter attack.

‘Atletico played with fear in the first half that if we score they could be out, but once they scored they played with a cushion. We lost possession and Diego Costa is one of the best strikers in the world.’

And the gloom grew ever darker with Wenger’s concession that Laurent Koscielny, who went off on a stretcher early on, looks like he will be sidelined for a long period of time.

The Arsenal boss added: ‘It is an achilles rupture and maybe we will have good news, but the first signs are not very good.’

Wenger’s final two games in charge come against Leicester and Huddersfield in the Premier League.

‘It was the worst possible result for us’: Wenger laments after Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Atletico

Arsene Wenger insists Arsenal can complete mission impossible in Madrid next week despite leaving themselves with an uphill struggle to reach the Europa League final.

Alexandre Lacazette’s opener put Arsenal on course for a vital win only for a comedy of defensive errors to allow Antoine Griezmann to fire home a late equaliser, and crucially an away goal.

Having played against 10 men for over 80 minutes following Sime Vrsaljko’s early dismissal; the Gunners carved out a host of opportunities to take a convincing lead into Thursday’s second leg.

But the wasteful Gunners now head into next week’s second leg in Madrid knowing they must score to have any chance of reaching the final in Lyon next month – a daunting task given Atletico have not conceded at the Wanda Metropolitano since January 20.

‘I think looking at the performance it was the worst possible result for us. We have to go there in a positive mood and qualify,’ Wenger said.

‘We can only look at ourselves. You don’t look at the stats but the performance and we know we can score anywhere, let’s focus on that but recover first and see what we can do over there.

‘We have to go over there with absolute belief that we can do it.

‘We gave away a goal from nowhere and have to overcome the disappointment. I think we could already be qualified tonight.

‘It didn’t happen, their goalkeeper made many saves and you see that they have the quality up front to take advantage of a mistake.’ Wenger also believes his side were on the wrong side of a refereeing decision in the build up to Griezmann’s leveller, Danny Welbeck appeared to be fouled just moments before the Frenchman’s effort.

The Frenchman added: ‘I think it was a foul on Welbeck. Did the referee over compensate for the early sending off? Yes, it is possible.’
