Lacazette Completes Record Breaking £53m Move From Lyon On A Five-year Contract

Alexandre Lacazette has become Arsenal’s record signing after joining from Lyon in a deal which could be worth up to £53m.

The Frenchman was at Arsenal’s training centre in Hertfordshire on Tuesday to have a medical before completing his record transfer from Lyon.

And on Wednesday afternoon the deal was completed, with Lacazette signing a five-year contract at the Emirates Stadium.

He will join up with his new team-mates for a pre-season tour to Australia and China next week.

A club statement on Wednesday evening read: ‘Alexandre Lacazette has agreed to join us on a long-term contract, for an undisclosed fee.

‘He is expected to travel with the tour party to Sydney this weekend and is likely to make his home debut in the Emirates Cup on July 29 or July 30.

‘The deal is subject to the completion of regulatory processes.’

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: ‘We are very happy to have Alexandre join our group. He has shown over a number of years that he can score goals and that he is a very efficient finisher.

‘As well, he has very interesting technical qualities and a strong character. So he is a guy who is a great addition for us, and someone who will help us challenge at the top level this season.’

Lacazette’s transfer will smash the Arsenal transfer record which stands at £42.5m for Mesut Ozil in 2013.

Lyon, his hometown club, will receive £46m with up to £7m more in add-ons depending on his success in north London.

His arrival could hasten the departure of his France team-mate Olivier Giroud who is wanted by Everton, West Ham and Marseille.

Arsenal Agree Club Record £44m Deal To Sign Lacazette From Lyon

Arsenal have agreed a deal with Lyon to sign France striker Alexandre Lacazette for what could be a club-record transfer fee of £44million.

The deal would surpass the £42.5m it cost Arsenal to sign Mesut Ozil from Real Madrid in 2013 and is expected to be completed in the next 48 hours after Lacazette travels to London for a medical.

Arsenal made an unsuccessful £29m bid to sign the 26-year-old a year ago and saw an opening offer of £39.5m rejected this summer, before reaching an agreement with Lyon owner Jean-Michel Aulas.

Aulas dismissed speculation the transfer could be worth £58.7m including bonuses, saying: ‘It’s an impossible sum that is not realistic. The first offer made by Arsenal was £39.5m.

‘The deal will happen for something between that and £43.8m. To be close to €50m is something unique, and will be a record for Arsenal and a record for Lyon.

‘One must also take into account that traditionally, a club like Arsenal do not have the habit of spending so much for one player.

‘We will without a doubt hit a record. It is not a small transfer, €50m for a player who was produced by our club.’

Arsene Wenger has refused to give up the pursuit and will be delighted to sign one of his top transfer targets after accepting that he is unlikely to get Kylian Mbappe from Monaco.

Lacazette has been with Lyon since the start of his career, scoring 129 goals in 275 games for his hometown club. Last season he scored 37 times in 45 appearances.

Chelsea Star Bertrand Traore Completes Move To Lyon In Five-Year Deal

Lyon have completed the signing of Chelsea’s Bertrand Traore in a deal worth up to £16million.

The 21-year-old joins the French side on a five-year deal for an initial £8.8m after an impressive 2016-17 campaign on loan with Ajax, where he scored 13 goals in all competitions.

Traore was a key member of Peter Bosz’s side as they made it to the Europa League final before losing 2-0 to Manchester United.

This comes after the 28-year-old Chilean was linked with a move to English sides Manchester City, Chelsea and French champions PSG. The current English Premier League earner is Manchester United’s Paul Pogba who gets on 290,000 pounds a week.

Arsenal is set to demand 50 million pounds should they fail to reach an agreement with him.

Rafael Da Silva Joins Lyon From Manchester United

Rafael Da Silva. | image source:

Rafael da Silva has joined French club Lyon from Manchester United on a four-year contract for an undisclosed fee.

The 25-year-old right-back, who has two Brazil caps, moved to United along with his twin brother Fabio from Fluminense in 2008.

However, he had fallen out of favour at the club under Louis van Gaal, starting just six league games last season.

“I want to thank Manchester United fans for all the love during those eight years,” Rafael tweeted.

He was left out of United’s squad for their pre-season tour of the United States, before Torino right-back Matteo Darmian joined the Old Trafford club.

Rafael joins the Ligue 1 runners-up having made 170 appearances for Manchester United, scoring five goals.

He won three Premier League titles, the Club World Cup and the League Cup during his seven years at United.

Rafael’s brother Fabio has already left United, having joined Cardiff City in January 2014.

VIDEO: Arsenal Thrash Lyon 6-0

Alex Iwobi scored his first goal for Arsenal as they continued their preparations for the new season with a 6-0 friendly win over Lyon.

The 19-year-old winger, who is the nephew of former Bolton forward Jay-Jay Okocha, capped an impressive first half with Arsenal’s third goal.

Olivier Giroud, Aaron Ramsey and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain were also on target for the Gunners in the first half.
Mesut Ozil netted a fifth on the hour before Santi Cazorla’s late strike.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger dismissed suggestions on Friday that he could sign almost any player in the world after club director Lord Harris said he has the backing to break the club’s transfer record for a top striker.

If this performance, albeit against a rusty Lyon side, is an indicator of their potential in front of goal this season then Wenger may well elect to leave the money in the bank.

FRANCE: Man Decapitated In Terror Attack

A man has been decapitated and several others injured at a factory in France in what President Francois Hollande has called a terrorist attack.

Two men drove into the Air Products gas factory near Lyon, officials said, before several explosions were heard.

One of the suspects, who was investigated by police in 2006, has been arrested.

The dead man was found with Arabic inscriptions on him and an Islamist flag was found near the site.

At a press conference from Brussels, Mr Hollande confirmed that two attackers had targeted the chemicals factory in Saint-Quentin-Fallavier, crashing into it in a car.

“We have no doubt that the attack was to blow up the building. It bears the hallmarks of a terrorist attack,” he said.

Lyon to let talented misfit Gourcuff go

The rollercoaster career of former France international Yoann Gourcuff suffered a new blow Sunday when Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas revealed he was surplus to requirements.

“He’s a great player but he just couldn’t fit in,” Aulas said of the 28-year-old he signed in 2010 for 22 million euros ($25million) on a five year deal worth 450,000 euros per month for the former AC Milan and Bordeaux attacking midfielder.

The Lyon president was talking the morning after Paris Saint Germain’s 2-1 win away at Montpellier erased their slim hopes of winning the Ligue 1 title with a game to spare.

“What would have been wonderful is if he could have proved with Lyon what a great player he is,” Aulas told French television on Sunday.

“This is not great news for him,” Aulas admitted. “But it stops here.”

Operating on a more modest economic system than in their heyday when they won seven straight titles between 2002-2008, the club have been offloading those remaining players on big salaries.

The 31-times capped Gourcuff, France’s player of the year in 2009, was infamously frozen out by star players Franck Ribery and Nicolas Anelka at France’s disastrous 2010 South Africa World Cup campaign, which ended in a player strike and first round elimination.

Lyon have had a successful run with a young team built with up to nine first team starters coming from not only the youth team, but also the Lyon area.

Their 2014-2015 campaign, which has seen them return to the Champions League, has been marked by the emergence of Alexandre Lacazette, who has scored 27 times in the league with a game to go.
