23 dead as Madagascar troops battle cattle rustlers

Deadly clashes between troops and armed cattle rustlers on the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar have left 23 people dead, the army said on Thursday.

Eight of the dead were soldiers while 15 of them were cattle thieves, known as “dahalos” in the local Malagasy language.

“We have eight soldiers killed and another 12 injured,” said Theophile Rakotonirina, head of the army’s operations and intelligence unit.

“We have also identified 15 dead dahalos.”

The incident took place early on Wednesday in an area near Ankazoabo in southwestern Madagascar. Troops were alerted to the theft by a cattle breeder who had 90 of his zebu stolen.

Hunting the prized humped zebu cattle is a rural tradition among young Malagasy men who do it to prove their virility and valour.

A symbol of wealth, zebu are at the heart of local culture in southern Madagascar, where they are eaten only at weddings or special celebrations, sacrificed for ancestor worship or in burial rituals.

The tradition of stealing them has fuelled inter-communal violence, with the army accused of carrying out extra-judicial killings and razing villages that are suspected of sheltering cattle rustlers.

Kenya Premier League champions Gor Mahia head to Madagascar on Saturday, less than 24 hours before their return leg of the Africa Champions league preliminary round game against CNaPS.

K’Ogalo hold a slim 1-0 lead over the Madagascar champions and will be hoping to avoid defeat to make it to the first round of the continent’s most lucrative club championships.

Coach Frank Nuttall has limited options in the team given most of his preferred first team players were not registered for the tournament.

But in an interview, Nuttall maintained confidence his team will be victorious.

“We played well in Nairobi. And happy we won. We would have loved to be heading to the return leg with a bigger margin but give it to CNaPS, they played very well in the first leg,” opined Nuttall.

“But we have a good squad, limited options of course because you are aware we did not register some players, but the ones I havewill do the job,” he added.

The travelling party has 19 players among them midfielder Collins Okoth “Gatusso” who has been having problems with the technical bench and club management due to his wanting discipline.

Defender Dikir Glay is back in the squad after missing last weekend’s league match against Mathare United through injury.

Those in the travelling squad include : Fredrick Onyango, Godfrey Walusimbi, Kevin Oluoch, Musa Mohamed,Collins Okoth, Ronald Otieno, Jerry Santo, Timothy Otieno, Khalid Aucho , David Juma ,Bernard Odhiambo, Eric Ochieng , Haron Shakava, Michael Olunga , Bonface Oluoch, Israel Emuge, George Odhiambo, Dirkir Glay, Ali Abondo.

Nuttall optimistic of Gor progress

Gor Mahia head to Madagascar to face off with CNaPS in their Africa Champions League return leg with a slim 1-0 lead, but coach Frank Nuttall says his team is not under any pressure. a

While he admits his team did not play to the optimum best in the first leg in Nairobi in which Victor Ali Abondo’s first minute goal from the spot made the difference, they have worked on the few mistakes and are heading for the return leg confident.

“We carry a lead and that is the most important fact,” he said.

“And we did not concede at home which would have been a disaster,” he added.

Nuttall says the frailties in defense and a few weaknesses in the midfield have been rectified and the team is in perfect shape to take on their opponents.

CNaPS is a very good side. They run a lot as was evident in the first leg match. We cannot under rate them especially now that they will be playing at home. But we know we have a strong team. We are not only going to defend our lead but also look for more goals.”

Nuttall has a squad of 20 players to pick from. However most of his new signings are not registered for the tournament.

Mixed fortunes for Kenya’s flagbearers

Kenya’s representatives in the Africa club championships left themselves with a mountain to climb in the preliminary stage of the competitions after posting discouraging results at home in Nairobi.

While Kenyan Premier League champions Gor Mahia squeezed a 1-0 win over Madagascar’s CNAPs on Saturday in the Africa Champions League, Sofapaka, the domestic cup champions were hammered 2-1 by Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum on Sunday.

The results put both Gor Mahia and Sofapaka under pressure to avoid defeat in the return leg. Gor Mahia may have the luxury of forcing a draw to sail to the first round, but Sofapaka will have to win by at least two clear goals to make it through.

Against CNAPs, Gor Mahia started brightly and were duly awarded a penalty in the first minute which was scored by Ali Abondo, but that was the only positive that came out of the Kenyan champions who looked to be struggling to find their rhythm throughout the game and ultimately, the reaction of their coach Frank Nuttall after the match summarized their frustration.

“Generally we played well, but the problem is we could not score. We will need to work on that before the second leg,” he said.

CNAPs gave a good account of themselves. The missed two open chances, something that Nuttal will have to be wary of when they head to Mianarivo for the second leg.

“Of course, they are a good side with pace especially on the flanks. That we have noted and we shall work on it.”

Sofapaka who four years ago missed the group stage by a whisker put themselves on the knife edge with a 2-1 defeat in Nairobi by Zimbabwe’s FC Platinum.

And while their coach Sam Timbe remained defiant in the face of defeat saying his side will turn tables in the return leg in Zvishavane Zimbabwe, he knows their chances are extremely slim.

“On paper, it is not going to be easy for us. But do not write us off. We can overturn the result and have the advantage,” said the Sofapaka coach.

“Everything is possible in football. They have the advantage but when you look at how we played, we also had our chances which we did not utilise. They got two opportunities and they scored,” added Timbe.

Platinum scored through Brian Muzondiwa in the 25th minute before Razak Fiston leveled for the hosts two minutes after restart. But the goal that killed Sofapaka came in the 74th courtesy of Donald Ngoma.

Sofapaka must score twice and avoid conceding in the return leg.
