Mwanamke Akamatwa Kwa Madai Ya Kushiriki Mapenzi Na Mvulana Wa Sekondari

Akizungumzia kisa hicho, Fatuma Gedi alisema,

Wakati niliiona nikaona ule mwili nakarudia mara mbili.

Why won’t you recognise us? Kenyan tribe asks government

The Waata, a minority community with members spread across eight counties, is demanding recognition by the Kenyan government.

Waata, a historic hunting and gathering community, has its members concentrated in Marsabit, Isiolo, Wajir, Mandera, Lamu, Tana River, Kilifi and Kwale Counties.

Speaking to the press in Malindi, members of the community claimed to have been marginalised in all spheres of the economy for decades despite the constitution advocating for recognition of marginalised tribes.

The Community spokesperson Mr. Jilo Notu, formerly a KNUT official in Malindi, urged the government to give them preferential treatment as is similarly given to other marginalised groups such as people living with disabilities and women.

“We are pleading with the government that in the coming census we be recognised as a tribe and not bundled out as others,” Notu said adding that their population is more than 13,000.

Mr. Bashani Soso who leads the Waata group of professionals said that the Kenyan government had disobeyed the constitution by disregarding article 56, 100 and 174 which advocate for recognition of minority tribes and their inclusivity in government.

Among the programmes the community is asking the government to engage them in include affirmative action, special opportunities in educational and economic fields, special opportunities for access to employment, develop their cultural values, languages and practices

They said chances were that the complications would endanger the life of the 32-year-old woman stabbed by her husband Mohamed Deeq.

The police and medics secured Ibrahim an ambulance in which she was rushed to the hospital.

The mother of four is scheduled to be airlifted to Nairobi for an operation at the Kenyatta National Hospital.

Road construction going on in Wajir. | image source: the-star.co.ke

More than 50 years after independence, one of the oldest colonial towns in the former Northern Frontier District is finally getting tarmac road.

The first ever tarmac roads in Wajir town have created quite a buzz among residents of whom most do not mind the diversions caused by closed roads under construction, although some complain about the dust.

Businessman Mohamed said residents are excited about the project that will give the town a facelift and open up trade.

“This is a very noble idea and I appeal to the county government to open other access roads within the town and as well expand the tamarcking to the roads in other subcounties,” he said.

Speaking when he inspected the roadworks on Monday, Governor Ahmed Abdullahi said the 28km road network will be complete by the end of the year.

Construction of the road network, one of the flagship projects of his administration, began in 2013 and will cost KES 1.2 billion.

Admitting he had never seen tarmac before “with my eyes”, Mohamed said residents welcome the development.

“We are excited. We have been waiting for it for the last two years,” he said.

Development worker, Ismail Hussein, said the price of land has increased in the town, thanks to the tarmac.

“I flew from Nairobi this morning to buy a piece of land. I was surprised it is five time more than I expected,” Hussein said.

“I never thought land in Wajir would cost so much.”

President Uhuru Kenyatta has commended youths from North Eastern who walked for almost a 1000 kilometres preaching peace and unity.

The President said the North Eastern youth had set a good example and encouraged young people across the country to be at the forefront in the search for solutions to the challenges facing the country including insecurity.

President Kenyatta spoke at State House, Nairobi, when he met three of the young men who managed to finish the 1000 kilometre “Walk of Hope”.

The three – Noordin Badil Tube, Ahmednour Saleh Mohamud, and Salah Mohamed Abdinour – trekked from Garissa to Mandera during the month of Ramadhan when they were fasting.

The walk initially attracted hundreds of people but many dropped along the way as the journey progressed across the difficult terrain of Garissa, Wajir and Mandera counties.

The President said young people have a big role to play in consolidating the country’s unity and promoting peace.

“The country’s prosperity lies in our unity and everyone of us playing their part. To do that we have to shun tribalism and negative ethnicity,” the President said.

He said the youth should be brought on board and facilitated to fully participate in addressing challenges facing the North Eastern region.

Narrating their experiences during the walk, the walkers said in every village they stopped along the route, they spread a message of hope, tolerance, co-existence and anti-radicalization among the people of the region.

Members of the North East Professional Association led by their Chairman, Dr. Abdirizack Arale, accompanied the youths on the State House visit.

Dr Arale said the association is committed to working with the Government and the youth from the region to ensure peace and security.

He said the association supported the “walk for hope” because it believes that “hopeless is a recipe for disaster”.

The meeting was also attended Chief of Staff and Head of Public Service Joseph Kinyua, Abdikadir Mohamed, the President’s Advisor on Constitutional Affairs and North Eastern Regional Commissioner Mohamud Saleh.
