Naomi Osaka

This fascinating 21 year-old of Japanese and Haitian heritage who has spent most of her life in the US was the other player in the controversial US Open final, overshadowed by the behaviour of Serena Williams. As she showed on that tumultuous night in New York, Osaka is equipped with a game that can take her to No 1. Already this year year she soared from a ranking of 68 to No 5. If she can withstand the pressure of expectation she may emerge as the player women's tennis has been waiting for.

Mauricio Pochettino
