The removal of 12 sewing needles from the stomach of 10-month old girl puzzled many following a successful operation at Thika Level Five hospital.

How the sharp needles ended up in the infant's body since they did not leave any mark of penetration remains a mystery.

Doctors at the facility are working out ways to remove one other needle which is still lodged in the child's hip bone.

Jacinta Ndunge, the girl's mother, told The Star on Saturday that her daughter has never come into contact with such needles.

She said the girl has not started crawling hence ruled out the possibility that she could have been bricked by the metallic objects.

Ndunge said that she noticed the child had a problem after she became restless and developed fever.

"I decided to rush her to the hospital where she was at first diagnosed with pneumonia and admitted."

"I had no idea what was ailing her as she would cry a lot when put in a sitting position," the mother of four said.

Njunge said that while bathing her daughter, she felt a sharp object on the child's buttocks and sought the intervention of the doctors.

"A doctor who was in the ward immediately responded and removed one needle after examining her."

"It was then that they ordered a scan which revealed that there were 13 other needles in my daughter’s body," the woman said.

It is through concerted efforts between surgeons and imaging experts at the hospital that 12 out of 13 of the needles were removed.

They used an image intensifier - a portable X-ray device, which guided the surgeons on the location of the objects.

Ndunge has refuted witchcraft as the cause of her daughter's misfortune saying that she is a staunch Christian and a follower of the Anglican Church of Kenya.

"I actually don’t believe in witchcraft. Our family believes in prayers through which the unknown powers behind my daughter’s adversity will be revealed," she said.
