On Wednesday, Tottenham sealed a 2-0 win over Crystal Palace.in their new stadium, to move third on the table with just a point above Arsenal.

With Arsenal and Chelsea both winning midweek games, a misstep and Tottenham could have ended the night with the best stadium in the capital, and the third best team.

Instead, they returned to London’s number one spot, and the national third, even if Arsenal are merely a point behind with a game in hand.

It is not always easy to win a first game in a new stadium – Arsenal did not manage it, against Aston Villa at the Emirates – but Tottenham were comfortable here, rarely challenged by a Palace team long on grit but short on ambition.

Meanwhile, Manchester City returned to the top of the premier league table with a 2-0 victory over Cardiff.

Kevin De Bruyne and Le Roy Sané’s efforts in either half were enough to see the Cityzens move one point above contenders Liverpool as the title race hots up.

Elsewhere, Chelsea hammered Brighton 3-0 to climb to fifth as battle for champions league spot intensifies.
