Four General Service Unit police officers died on the spot when their vehicle was involved in a fatal road accident along Kabarnet-Iten road on Tuesday evening.

The Land Rover police van, which was ferrying police officers deployed to the Kerio Valley to stem banditry in Baringo and Elgeyo Marakwet counties, reportedly veered off the road and rolled several times as it negotiated sharp corners in the rugged terrain.

Baringo County Commissioner Peter Okwanyo said three other officers were seriously injured during the incident.

Okwanyo said the injured officers were rushed to Kabarnet county referral hospital before they were rushed to Eldoret-based Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.

“The driver lost control as he negotiated corners in Kaptimbor area near Rimoi Game Reserve,” he said.

Okwanyo called on drivers plying the route to be cautious, since the area is hilly, with sharp corners.

Eye witnesses said the police vehicle was speeding when the accident occurred.

National Transport and safety Authority reports indicate that road carnages have increased by 45% this year.

NTSA reported in July that 1,574 people died in road accidents between January 1, 2016 and June 30, compared to 1,488 deaths at a similar period in 2015.
