Vichwa ngumu! From Kepa to Messi: Footballers who refused to be substituted

On Sunday, Chelsea's keeper, Kepa Arrizabalaga caused a storm after he appeared to publicly defy manager Maurizio Sarri and refuse to be substituted in the final moments of extra time in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley.

The Spanish goalkeeper went down injured as penalties approached, seemingly struggling with cramp, prompting Sarri to ready Willy Caballero to come on.

But extraordinarily, the 24-year-old rose to his feet and waved away the substitution and insisted he was fit enough to continue.

After the hilarious drama, we take a look at other players who refused to either be substituted or they actually preferred to be used as substitutes.

Carlos Tevez

In 20111, Argentine forward, Tevez refused to come on as a substitute in the second-half of Manchester City’s 2-0 defeat at Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Lionel Messi

Oh yes Messi is on the list!!!

Unlike his fellow Argentine, Tevez, Messi refused to come off the pitch back in 2014 in theiir 3-0 win over Eibar, a game which he had grabbed a goal.

At that time, Barca coach Luis Enrique tried to withdraw Messi, signalling to him that he would rest him for the last quarter an hour of the match. Messi instead gestured to him that he wanted to stay on.

He then walked up the field and ignored his boss' pleas.

Nikola Kalinic

The Croatian striker was sent home during the 2018 World Cup after he refused to come on as a substitute during their 2-0 victory over Nigeria.

Kalinic started on the bench for the fourth successive international match but was asked to enter the fray by boss Zlatko Dalic in the closing stages of the Group D clash in Kaliningrad.

However, according to reports in Croatia, the striker declined his manager's orders, citing a problem with his back.

Dimitar Berbatov

At the start of 2007/08,  Berbatov was involved in a storm as he refused to play for Juande Ramos’s Tottenham side to try and force through a move to Manchester United. He got his wish as the north London side caved into United’s offer on transfer deadline day.
