Nakuru has been identified as one of the counties leading in the number of women elected to parliament in the just conduced general elections.

According to Gilgil Mp-elect Martha Wangari, the move would go into history books adding the electorate had proven to the world that women leadership could also work.

During the hotly contested elections Susan Kihika was elected the as the county senator, Liz Chelule (Women rep), Jane Kihara (Mp Naivasha) and Charity Kathambi (Mp Njoro)

While thanking the county residents, the Jubilee parliamentarian said that they were ready to serve the electorate after giving them a chance.

Wangari garnered 51,943, followed by Paul Gitahi Mwaura 15,943 (Maendeleo Chap Chap) while Patrice Kiiru of Mazingira party emerged a distance third with 963 votes.

Speaking in Gilgil town after been announced as the winner by the returning officer, Wangari said that Nakuru was among counties that had produced the largest number of women leaders.

“We are grateful that the electorate had faith in women leadership and so far we have five women legislators in the county,” she said.

Wangari termed the just concluded elections as the hardest for women leaders as they faced many challenges including ridicule and abuse.

“We soldiered on and despite the challenges we faced including court cases and abuses the voice of reason has won and it’s now time to perform,” she said.

She challenged losers in the elections including NASA top leadership to concede defeat noting that in any election there were losers and winners.

“In this case all Kenyans won as we had the most transparent and peaceful elections in the country and it’s now time to start working,” she said.

The sentiments were echoed by new Naivasha Mp Jane Kihara who according to provisional results was the winner for the seat.

Kihara who made a comeback for the second time said that the campaigns were the hardest for her and other women in the country.

“We thank the electorate mainly in Nakuru County for having faith in women leadership and we promise that that we shall not fail,” she said.

Speaking at Naivasha Boarding primary school where tallying was still going on, Kihara promised the voters a major change after they were sworn in.

“We have a record five women legislators in Nakuru County and we thank the voters for the confidence and its now our time to serve them,” she said.
