Families protecting child defilers in Bungoma - leader

More schoolgirls are getting defiled and impregnated in Bungoma county, women's rep Reginalda Wanyonyi has said.

Wanyonyi said the defilers are sometimes the students' family members, mothers helping them to procure abortions.

''You find a class six girl raped and impregnated by her father, what do you expect the mother to do? She will end up helping the child to abort," she said.

Wanyonyi asked families to protect their children instead and urged law enforcers to bring defilers to book.

She also asked courts to take sterner measures against offenders.

''You get someone being given a ten, twenty or even thirty thousand fine and he goes scot-free, whereas the law is very clear that if you are caught defiling schoolgirls you are supposed to be be given the life sentence,'' she said.
