Fresh cholera outbreak cases reported in Gilgil

Three fresh cases of cholera have been reported in the sprawling Kasarani estate in Gilgil bringing to seven the number of confirmed cases in the last two days.

Anxiety gripped the estate which is home to hundreds of flower farm workers as medics worked round the clock to contain the cholera outbreak.

A woman and her 11-year old daughter and a 12 year old boy were confirmed as positive and admitted at the treatment center in the estate. Nakuru County Public health officer Samuel King’ori confirmed the new cholera cases adding that they were in stable condition.

He attributed the cases to person to person transmission adding that health officers were on ground placing the necessary measures.

King’ori confirmed that there were enough drugs and personnel to contain the outbreak and called on members of the public to co-operate with them.

He added that the ban on hawking in the estate would remain in force until the current outbreak was fully contained. He added that the four patients admitted at the Naivasha sub-county referral hospital on Thursday were in stable condition.

Over twenty people in Nakuru County have so far died from cholera while 290 cases have been confirmed this year.

The fresh outbreak has been attributed to the poor status of the informal estate which does not have running water or a sewer system.
