Transport along the Naivasha-Mai Mahiu road was paralysed for more than an hour after a lorry ran over a herd of cattle, killing five of them. More than 10 others were seriously injured during the accident near Mirera power station.

The livestock owner and his family quarrelled with the driver before police intervened.

This is the third time this year that livestock crossing the road to a nearby dam have been hit by trailers on that road.

Witness Peter Kamathi said the trailer was heading towards Naivasha from Mai Mahiu town when the accident occurred. He said the livestock were rushing to the dam for water when the speeding lorry crushed into them.

“No one was injured in the lorry but more than 10 cattle have been seriously injured, with the owner seeking compensation from the driver,” Kamathi said. He attributed the accident to the design of the road, which was constructed in a sloppy area, with vehicles always on high speed.

A senior police officer said the driver had recorded a statement over the accident. He urged drivers to be cautious.
