Eliud Kipchoge was yesterday awarded with exceptional achievement of the year award during the Laureus Awards ceremony held in Monaco.

Kipchoge achieved the award after he set a new record in the men’s marathon, lowering the previous record set by Dennis Kimetto by seventy eight seconds.

However he missed out on the Sportsman of the year award which was won by Novak Djokovic.

There were six superstars nominated for the Sportsman category, including World Cup winner Kylian Mbappe, Ballon D'or winner Luka Modric and Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton, as well as eventual winner Djokovic.

Completing the list were London Marathon winner Eliud Kipchoge and NBA superstar LeBron James.

The women's category was won by Gymnast Simone Biles.

Golfer Tiger Woods won the Comeback award, while tennis player Naomi Osaka won Breakthrough of the Year. Football World Cup winners France won Team of the Year.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger was honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award.
