Over the years, there have been not so good reports surrounding football and mostly inside stadiums.

Away from the racial discrimination, pitch invaders and players drama, there have been tragedies inside stadiums which have resulted into deaths.

We take a look at some of the worst football tragedies across the world.

1. The Ghana disaster

The disaster took place at the Ohene Djan Stadium, Accra, Ghana on May 9, 2001 which took the lives of 127 people during a match pitying Accra Hearts of Oak (The Phobians) Sporting Club and the Asante Kotoko (Porcupine Warriors) Sporting Club.

2.Hillsborough disaster

In 1989, ninety-six football fans died in a crush at the stadium in Sheffield at an FA Cup semi-final match between Liverpool and Nottingham Forest.

3. The Guatemala disaster

Back in October 1996, 90 souls were lost during a World Cup qualification match between hosts Guatemala and Costa Rica at an overfilled stadium.

4. Kathmandu disaster

The Kathmandu Stadium tragedy occurred on March 12, 1988 at the Dasarath Rangasala Stadium in Kathmandu during a soccer match pitying Liberation Army of Bangladesh and Janakpur Cigarette Factory Ltd.
93 lives were lost with over 100 people injured while attempting to escape from a hailstorm.

5. The National Stadium Disaster.

It is described as the worst stadium disaster and it took place at the Peruvian capital Lima in 1964. More than 300 people lost their lives.

The stadium was packed to its 53,000 capacity, which is believed to be a little over 5% of Lima's population at the time.
